  • RISCA LYRICS IN THE BLUES
    Oct 23 2022

RISCA LYRICS IN THE BLUES             (INSTRUMENTAL BY W.T.S.B.A)
THERE'S ONE MORE STYLE OF BLUES TO TALK ABOUT.
A FAMOUS NAUGHTY SONG CALLED  "MY DING-A-LING, WRITTEN BY CHUCK BERRY WAS PERFORMED BY DOUG CLARK AND THE HOTNUTS, FROM CHAPEL HILL. THEIR THEME WAS CALLED "HOT NUTS", MEANING HOT PEANUTS, "GET UM WHY YOU CAN". EVERY SHOW THE FAB PLAIDS DID A SONG CALLED "COOL ME OUT", WHICH HAD A CHORUS, "JUMP ALL OVER ME, SET MY BODY FREE, USE ME UP, LOVE ME OUT, BAKE ME IN YOUR OVEN, GIRL I NEED YOUR LOVIN', MAKE ME SHOUT, COOL ME OUT". TODAY THAT IS NOT CONSIDERED PROVOCATIVE.
BUT, BLUES ARTIST BACK IN THE MID 50's BEGAN RECORDING SONG LYRICS WITH DOUBLE MEANINGS THAT GOT SOME UNFAVORABLE MENTION. OF COURSE, YOUNG FOLK INTERPRETED RISCA LYRICS ONE WAY, MOST LIKELY THEIR PARENTS ANOTHER WAY. AND CHURCH GOERS WERE RIGHT, BUT THEY ALWAYS HAD A FIT IF YOU WOULD NOT TOW THEIR LINE, HOOK, LINE, AND SINKER.
IN DECIDING WHAT TUNES TO RECORD @ REFLECTIONS STUDIO FOR BOTH THE FAB PLAIDS AS WELL AS W.T.S.B.A., OUR PRODUCER NELSON LEMMOND'S DECISIONS FOR HIS SELECTIONS FINALLY BOILED DOWN TO "SEXY WAYS", "JUST ASK THE LONELY" AND "IT WONT BE THIS WAY ALWAYS" PLUS SEVERAL OTHER ORIGINAL HITS PREVIOUSLY MADE POPULAR BY BLUES/BEACH ARTISTS.
AFTER ASKING OUR OPINIONS, HE MULLED IT OVER, THEN MADE GREAT PICKS, BOTH TO RECORD/MARKET TO  VARIOUS RECORD LABELS. THE FAB PLAIDS RECORDED "SEXY WAYS" ON CHRIST BEACHLEY'S  'IT WILL STAND' RECORD LABEL, 1982, BACKED BY 'B' SIDE "IT WONT BE THIS WAY ALWAYS". ANOTHER SUCCESS THAT SURPRISED US ALL WAS "JUST ASK THE LONELY" WHICH  LASTED LONGER THAN "SEXY WAYS". BUT, THINK ABOUT THAT CONTRAST, SAD(LONELY) VS EXCITED(SEXY). NELSON HAD INCREDIABLE VISION FOR HIS AGE. HOWEVER,  IT TOOK  BOTH HIS MONEY AND HIS PERSUASION TO CLOSE THE DEAL.
"SEXY WAYS" HAD SOME VERY POPULAR FOLLOWERS AS MICHAEL WAYNE, DURING LIVE SHOWS, WOULD SING 'SWISH, SWISH, SWISH YOUR TEATIES' BUT THAT WAS NOT THE REAL LYRICS TO HANK BALLARD ORIGINAL HIT. OUR AUDIENCES INTERPRETED IT TO MEAN THAT SINCE ANOTHER LINE IN THE SONG WAS WIGGLE,WIGGLE WIGGLE TIL YOUR HIPS FALL OFF THE BONE. SHAGGERS WENT FOR IT. YOU JUST NEVER KNOW UNTIL YOU PUT IT ON THE RADIO, WHAT THE PUBLIC LIKES. SO THAT IS THE PRIMARY CAPITAL INFUSION RISK. ANYWAY,  GALS LOVED TO HEAR WAYNE SING IT.
TWO OTHER POSSIBILITIES ALMOST MADE IT, AN OLD BLUES TUNE CALLED "MY BIG TEN INCH('RECORD OF MY FAVORITE BLUES')", AND ANOTHER ORIGINAL HIT  "MEET ME WITH YOUR BLACK DRAWERS ON", BUT A FEMALE HAD TO SING THAT, SO IT WAS SCRATCHED. NEITHER HAD ANY VULGAR LYRICS, BUT THE WHOLE INTENTION WAS TO GET RECONITION FOR THE BLUES PERFORMER, AND THE BEACH FOLKS FAVORED IT.  RECORD LABELS ALWAYS PUSHED RISCA TO SELL THEIR ARTIST.
THE 5 ROYALS SONGS WERE POPULAR ON CHARTS BACK THEN. 'SCHOOL GIRL'  WAS A GREAT SHAG TUNE, AND MOST RADIO STATIONS DID NOT BAN IT, LIKE MANY OF HANK BALLARD EARLIER HITS.
THE RISCA LYRICS TO SCHOOL GIRL - WOULD SHE, (YOU THINK SHE WOULD'NT)     COULD SHE, (OH, YOU THINK SHE COULD'NT)              DO SHE, (YOU THINK SHE DONT)                                  WILL SHE, (YOU THINK SHE WONT)                           (OH, OH, OH, OH), BUT SHE WILL&n

    dd's BLUES BIO
Hailing from Mint Hill, NC, dd's BLUES, better known these days as little dennyboy, has been playing music his entire life, beginning with elementary school band,  Army Band, all the way into his late 70's. Now, a local song writer, he loves recording sentimental alto sax ballads in his home recording studio. His twin ladies, 'big toot and baby toot' have backed his act since early 1960. He continues to arrange/record classical  beach tunes, instrumentals, country sax and even some bluegrass/southern gospel. He does it for fun, but some of his material gained a bit of recognition. In 2013, he wrote "Bain Academy Boogie" and "Mint Hill Rocks" for the Mint Hill Bain Daze celebrations.  In 2016 he penned "Queen City blues", a recording featuring Michael Wayne Deese and Van Coble. It reached #2 on John Hooks Boogie and Blues Chart of beach music fame. Lately he just finished "I Love Mint Hillians, (always have and I always will)".  It will be published soon as a vocal duet.
Since the early 60's, little dennyboy uniquely  performed on both alto/tenor saxes together in harmony, plus vocal duets with the Fabulous Plaids from Charlotte. One of his favorite Plaid  instrumentals he loved  playin'  twins on since 1962, was called 'Water Melon Man'.  The Plaids were  early converts, in 1959, from rock-a-billy into R&B, and were best known for their 'Plaid Power'. Many times you could hear a pin drop in a song break, freezing their audiences in place as 5 band players improvised from stage together as they went, talking among one another in what the music folks call vibes. Carrying the audiences with them along with their own excitement together.
After retiring from the Plaids, Denny started up 'dd's BLUES', a one man band that performed lead sax melodies over traditional sound tracks from the Platters and other beach music pioneers. Being a winemaker that received his degree in winemaking and grape farming from Surry Community College in 2012, he made connections with statewide vineyards, performing to crowds back then before the beach music genre took over.
So, @ 80, he just published his first podcast and received his new rss.com feed, and plans to compose both mp3 tunes and written articles about his music history, primarily about the blues; all kinds of blues, country, R&B, jazz and bluegrass. Denny has played all styles over a lifetime, and enjoys any genre, including classical, that's performed well or recorded properly.
Most importantly, he thanks the Great I Am for gifting his natural talent at birth. In response to so many folks coming to the stages those many years to ask how he plays twins, 'big toot and baby toot', together.  He did not lie, as he explained that many times it came through him from that greater power, and even admits sometimes, he just sat back and watched the Lord walk all over his sax keys for him. Many times as Denny performed with the late and great Windell Cunningham around the QC at retirement homes, those older citizens got so much joy, never seeing a performer playing twins together. "Just a few minutes of fun for Windell & I, those folks returned to us 4 times over", their eagerness just for a few moments of pure joy in their lives once more.  Somehow, they just knew that talent came through us to them too!  "Those events became so special to Windell & I".                 Contact  'dd's BLUES' , little dennyboy,  directly at caddlco@aol.com
