  • Summary

  • American ISIS is an eight-episode podcast that tells the remarkable story of Russell Dennison, an American ex-convict and Muslim convert who joined the Islamic State in Syria. As US and coalition airstrikes rained down on ISIS fighters in 2018 and 2019, Dennison secretly recorded dozens of hours of audio about his past and his life with ISIS and sent them to journalist Trevor Aaronson with one condition: Nothing he said could be revealed until he was captured or - more likely - killed.

Really well done!

I’ve just finished listening to this podcast. I really liked it!!

It feels like an honest account of Russell’s emotional and dangerous journey from the US to Syria. I noted with interest Trevor’s reflection on Russell’s words, at times attempting to rationalise and understand Russell’s truth. I’d have liked more of that throughout the podcast. In my opinion Trevor’s respectful observation resulted in a lack of critical analysis. That said, perhaps the objective observation “through the window” into Russell’s life is what made this podcast so special- except to say I’d have loved more debate of the facts.

When listening it struck me that Russell was not a civilian or an innocent bystander and perhaps neither was his wife. He went to Syria for Jihad and he found it. I found Russell’s subtle victim mentality quite interesting. He was on a search for his own inner peace and freedom from oppression in the US (Trevor cites the rejection of Russell’s beard at his workplace and harassment by US enforcement agencies) whilst simultaneously working with an organisation and most likely being responsible for depriving others of the very same thing. Interesting!

Peace and love to Trevor’s mother and family who must be traumatised by this experience!

One-sided bigoted ignorant account

I can't stand the use of the "T" word firstly, and secondly "Islamic State/ISIS"? They don't even call themselves that - the organisation is known as "Daesh" - they do NOT represent Islam. And to share something like this to a wider, predominantly Western audience just feeds hatred, misunderstanding and creates divisions. I really wish people would do their research, become better informed and at least research more than one highly individualised account before sharing on such a huge platform such as Amazon, well any platform for that matter. Utterly shameful and dangerous, to say the least.
