Summary

A Campbell and Cater mystery. Crime in the Cotswolds just got deadly. When Lucas Burton arrives at a deserted farm, hoping to conduct a business deal, he stumbles across the body of a girl. And that's just the start of his problems. Penny Gower, from the local stables, spots his car leaving the crime scene, and when her friend Andrew Ferris calls the police it's only a matter of time before Lucas gets a visit from someone he'd rather not see...

A detective story

This started as a potentially great story but I felt it lost out on an opportunity to make it shine in my library. Sadly it didn't pack the punch it might have.
No matter. It was entertaining.

An enjoyable story well narrated

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Characters, backgrounds neatly interwoven and loose ends tied up at the end.
Superbly read by Judith Boyd...as ever.

Not bad

I wanted a crime novel to enjoy whilst relaxing. This book delivered. The main character Jess, I found at bit irritating - can't put my finger on why. The plot twists were a little predictable, but sometimes you need to get the murderer right don't you.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed this very much. I must admit I had put it to one side as I didn't know the author and only listened when I'd run out of everything else!
But what a mistake! Spent a marvellous few hours in the company of Jess and the characters down at the stables. Good characterisation and an interesting plot! I'm already planning my next listen for a good long journey.

Don’t be put off by the start.

It takes a while for the narrator to get to grips with the book but after the first one or two chapters Ed her rendition improves markedly.
As usual the regional accents are erratic and wander from one end of England to the other but the story distracts from that disaster and it’s worth forgiving the generic ‘rural accent’ which sets my teeth on edge.

Excellent follow on for Mitchell & Markby

I was really upset that Mitchell & Markby ended but loved this new series. It's different but on a similar theme. I'll be reading/listening to the rest of these books.
