Owen Kiskaddon first came to the court of the formidable King Severn as a prisoner, winning favor with the stormy monarch by masquerading as a boy truly blessed by the Fountain. Nine years hence, the once-fearful Owen has grown into a confident young man, mentored in battle and politics by Duke Horwath and deeply in love with his childhood friend, the duke's granddaughter. But the blissful future Owen and Elysabeth Mortimer anticipate seems doomed by the king's machinations.
A pretender to Severn's throne has vowed to seize the crown of Kingfountain. But Severn means to combat the threat by using Elysabeth as bait to snare the imposter - and forcing Owen, as a pawn in the dangerous charade, to choose between duty and devotion. With poisoners and spies circling ominously, and war looming on the horizon, Owen must make painful sacrifices to beat back the advancing shadows of death and disaster. Will Owen's conflicted heart follow the king's path or will he risk everything for love?

"great listen and story "
a really good follow up to the previous book, with more intriguing characters, love and sadness. give it a listen or read if you liked the first book
I am ruined for any other author or narrator. This series has me enthralled! Kate Rudd reads as I would read to myself. Give me more PLEASE
I'm writing from my phn, so this will be brief.
What sets this series apart from other fantasy type series is that there are no good/ evil characters. The paths chosen are due to life, circumstance, and how each accepts their lot in life. Life isn't fair, and the outcome of an individual is determined by how they take what's given to them and move ahead.
This is such a thought provoking Trilogy.
"Like the series so far"
The characters are well developed and the story is engaging. Excellent narrator. I'm looking forward to listening to the final volume.
This series gets better and better. Jeff wheeler has created a magical world with unique and totally plausible powers. The narrator is superb!
"intriguing and well-written...."
I really enjoyed the story. It was a good sequel to the 1st, The Queen's Poisoner. so far the series has been consistent and enjoyable and the narrator is really doing a good job with the stories.
can't wait to read next book. what a wonderful story . I love fantasys about histoty
"SO Much Better"
I reviewed the first book in the series and was not impressed. But THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING!!! I was captured from the first words and couldn't stop listening. And it made me laugh out loud and cry and that's not something many books can accomplish. I am
In love with these characters and am shocked by the depth of their character. I wish every young person would read this story.
"what a great ride"
My only wish is that I'd started with book 1. The strategy gets a little tedious if that's not your thing, but for me, it was a refreshing change from other historical novels that spend too much energy on simpering romance. There is no simmering here. Strong characters, personalities, storyline. Now I'm off to find book 3.
Well written and performed, looking forward to the next one in the series so much I'm getting it now.
