Owen Kiskaddon first came to the court of the formidable King Severn as a prisoner, winning favor with the stormy monarch by masquerading as a boy truly blessed by the Fountain. Nine years hence, the once-fearful Owen has grown into a confident young man, mentored in battle and politics by Duke Horwath and deeply in love with his childhood friend, the duke's granddaughter. But the blissful future Owen and Elysabeth Mortimer anticipate seems doomed by the king's machinations.
A pretender to Severn's throne has vowed to seize the crown of Kingfountain. But Severn means to combat the threat by using Elysabeth as bait to snare the imposter - and forcing Owen, as a pawn in the dangerous charade, to choose between duty and devotion. With poisoners and spies circling ominously, and war looming on the horizon, Owen must make painful sacrifices to beat back the advancing shadows of death and disaster. Will Owen's conflicted heart follow the king's path or will he risk everything for love?

"great listen and story "
a really good follow up to the previous book, with more intriguing characters, love and sadness. give it a listen or read if you liked the first book
"Love this Series!"
The boy's growth to manhood has come at a great cost for him. I feel the author has truly depicted the dilemma of political, strategic marriages that royal families had to endure. The character are strong and engaging. I look forward to the next book
I am ruined for any other author or narrator. This series has me enthralled! Kate Rudd reads as I would read to myself. Give me more PLEASE
I'm writing from my phn, so this will be brief.
What sets this series apart from other fantasy type series is that there are no good/ evil characters. The paths chosen are due to life, circumstance, and how each accepts their lot in life. Life isn't fair, and the outcome of an individual is determined by how they take what's given to them and move ahead.
This is such a thought provoking Trilogy.
"Engaging, with a Familiar Story-line"
This book ranks in the top 20% of fantasy/sci-fi novels I've listened to so far.
I really enjoyed the character development and the relationships between the characters.
I believe I would have to say Evie was my favorite character.
I really enjoyed listening to this book and the story flows nicely. While the story isn't the most original, it kept my interest enough to want to know what happens next to the characters. I've listened to books one and two and am now going to purchase book three.
"Surpasses the 1st book in every way"
I gave the 1st book 4 stars because well it was good but the 2nd book just took it to another level story progresses much faster again I'm just totally blown away by the narrator she is one of the most talented narrators out there, hands down!!
"A Real Mood Stabilzer"
I love the the author is able to place !e into a charming little world called Kingfountain.
"I love the book but recording skipped words"
I read the book and loved the series. I got the book to listen to on a road trip. it drove me nuts that the first word of every sentence was cut off. it felt like they recorded the narrator sentence by sentence. there was a pause and cut off the first word of every sentence. I would recommend reading the text instead of getting the audio book. I think Kate Rudd is a good narrator, but whoever edited the audio did a crap job. once again, I love the book and highly recommend it. I like Kate Rudd's narration. I hope that they can fix the book and return the first word to each sentence.
"superior to the first"
Amazing. I found the first story slow and tedious, but it was worth it to
have such well rounded characters and a fascinating story.
"Love This Series!"
I have not read the print version. I listen to audiobooks while I work at home and in my office.
The Dreadful Dead Man is explained.
The birth scene
I did feel a bit sad when Evie and Owen parted.
This is a delightful series. I would love to see it developed for television. I am looking forward to The King's Traitor and the upcoming 4th book, which is not yet released. I will also be trying our Wheeler's Muirwood series.
