Brilliant tale
Almost returned this as the opening few minutes didn’t appeal but thankfully I didn’t. A fascinating, different story. Heart stopping, and breaking, at times. Perfectly narrated. Highly recommend.

An obsession with a knife?
Great story writing, very moving at times and narration was good. A boy and his dog take a journey through an alien land leaving everything they know behind to help a stranger. What makes a boy into a man?

Not my usual genre but ..............
Any additional comments?
This is not the sort of book I usually read, it was recommended by my teenage nephew - I should listen to him more often. For me the narrator is the make or break factor in an audio book. Humphrey Bower is a fantastic narrator who really brought the characters to life. Men, women, boys, girls and a dog all with their own distinctive voices, it was difficult to believe that it was just him reading.
The story made me laugh and cry. I won't spoil it but THAT scene had me sobbing. All I can say is Manchee - what a good dog!

Awesome, can't wait for the next in the series.
It's a coming-of-age storyline yet its quite complex. The construction and imagery of this new world is subtle and believably alien, the characters true and the events dramatic, graphic and surprising. We journey with Todd as he is forced to leave his home, discover the cause of the quiet within the "noise" and face his many difficulties with Manchee but without vital knowledge. There are satisfyingly horrible "baddies" and events, and very likeable "goodies" in the story. We travel at a good clip with no dull or wasted places and just when we think its going to work out ok for him... we are left teetering.. wait! There's another book in the trilogy. Good!
The concept of a world where the thoughts of men and animals are audible and noisy intrigued me, the sample got me with Humphrey Bower's voicing of Manchee the dog's; "Need a poo Todd", "Poo. Poo Todd." It made me laugh because its just how your dog WOULD say it. He has done an exemplary job of narration and disappears into the characters and story smoothly and perfectly as an ideal narrator should.
There's something of the flavour of the Chronicles Of Ancient Darkness series by Michelle Paver although Patrick Ness's style is different of course, and I believe this book is suitable for the same age-group of early teens up.
I highly recommend both series no matter what your age.

Wow
Any additional comments?
I downloaded this book as it was in a sale and reviews were good. Turned out to be one of my best downloads. Such an enjoyable book, I didn't realise until the end that it was the first if a trilogy it was luck more than judgement that I had bought the first one, so immediately bought the next two. If u like Hunger Games you will love this series. I was so sorry it had to end. Great trilogy. Fully recommended.

The Knife of Never Letting Go.
Great story but slightly marred by the narrator who often sounded like he was out of breath and gulping for air.
Will definitely get the second book as the characters and story are worth sticking with.
