Summary
Forbidden to leave her island, Isabella dreams of the faraway lands her cartographer father once mapped. When her best friend disappears, she's determined to be part of the search party.
Guided by an ancient map and her knowledge of the stars, Isabella navigates the island's dangerous Forgotten Territories. But beneath the dry rivers and dead forests, a fiery myth is stirring from its sleep.

Prefer to read it...
The narrator is strong and I liked the book, but something about the combination didn't quite work for me. I read this instead and preferred it.

Lovely story
Not my usual genre but I did enjoy it. Vivid descriptions and beautiful writing I could imagine myself there on the island.

A story for children written in an adult style
This book got a great review on audible so I downloaded for the family (11 and 8 year olds) to listen to on a long car journey. Whilst the story captured the children’s interest, the language and style was more suited to adults in my view, and the struggled with some of it. Perhaps the target audience was older, but the spiritual fantasy themes of the story might not interest an older child so much.

Amazing
I found out about this book on an online class in lockdown when a classmate shared it. I instantly asked my mum to buy it and being the generous person she is, she did. Since then I have listened to it at night.
I definitely would recommend.

Excellent, imaginative and gripping
I’m so glad I tried this book. I wondered if a story less than five hours long was worth a credit, but it was really excellent. The story takes twists and turns and keeps upending the expectations of “the hero’s journey” narrative. Without flinching from issues of death, poverty, tyranny/ oppression and enslavement, it is ultimately a hopeful story of courage, determination and redemption.

A Perfect Children's Fantasy Story
With an intrepid female protagonist leading me through the pages, this book took me on an adventure across the fictional island of Joya. Such a fun read! I zoomed through it! Incredibly impressed with how much world building and culture the author included without it detracting from the story. Joya is a beautiful island with an interesting creation story. I thought it would be more about magical maps instead of a hero's journey of the mythological type we got, but I can't say I'm disappointed.

Original but didn't like the ending
It has a nice fairytale lyrical style. A book that is also suitable for adults looking for magical stories (which is what we are). The narration was ok but grated a bit by the end and might have made it hard to warm to Lupe, even though we wanted to. Also the ending didn't feel congruent - a bit of a weird anticlimax.

A delight
A wonderful tale that threads a winding path between the mythical and the real. To my shame, I don't know (yet) if this is based on traditional myths from somewhere or if it is a work of pure imagination. I'm excited to find out, though it doesn't matter to me either way.
It was magnificently read, which was the icing on an already fabulous cake.

Beautiful story, rushed narration
A beautiful and imaginative story. Unfortunately the narrator rushed it, but she did wonderful voices for the characters.
