Summary

Ever since she was a tiny child, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the random power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who won't stay dead. But now her father, the Mage Abhorsen, is missing, and to find him Sabriel must cross back into that world.

Though her journey begins alone, she soon finds companions: Mogget, whose seemingly harmless feline form hides a powerful and perhaps malevolent spirit; and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage long imprisoned by magic, now free in body but still trapped by painful memories.

With threats on all sides and only each other to trust, the three must travel deep into the Old Kingdom, toward a battle that will pit them against the true forces of life and death, and bring Sabriel face-to-face with her own hidden destiny.

A tale of dark secrets, deep love and dangerous magic, Sabriel introduces Garth Nix as an exceptional new talent.

Don't miss books two and three of this trilogy! Lirael and Abhorsen.

Critic reviews

"It's an epic journey in a world as richly realized as Middle-earth and much darker and bloodier than Harry's trials at Hogwarts...Tim Curry brings authority to the reading, grounding the fantastic elements with nuance of character and depth of emotion." ( AudioFile)
"Rich, complex, involving, hard to put down, this first novel...is excellent high fantasy." ( Publishers Weekly)
"A page-turner for sure." ( Booklist)

True fantasy.

Garth Nix has woven a wonderful tale. The world of the Old Kingdom jumps to life, filling the listener with fear and excitement. The story is so well structured it never gets too slow or too fast. All the characters are believable, and everything unfolds organically. Some aspects of the story are predictable, but not in a tiresome manner, and there is enough originality to easily make up for this. For young children some parts may be scary, it must be said.

Tim Curry reads wonderfully too. Try it!

Got me gripped from the start

I accidentally read book 2 Lirael before this one and I just had to know the back stories. Now there are even more books and audio books to listen to, each one being more exciting than the other.

awesome book and performance

could have done with much clearer production quality, however I think Tim Curry's performance and the quality of the book itself outweighs this.

This story is one of my favourites ,

I've read this repeatedly, to short as I never wanted it to end. Now I listen with my children to this unusual tale ,of adventure and bravery and the fear dead creatures and wild magic.

Bravo!

Kudos goes to Tom Curry in this absolutely incredible narration of the Old Kingdom series. I've adored these books for many years and Tom Curry does these books justice! He keeps the tones of characters throughout without slipping. He really brought this book alive for me.

An Adventure into Death

I loved this book as a teenager, and I still love it now. Sabriel is an amazing book, it's a coming of age adventure into death, battling evil forces, and journeying across an old kingdom of risen dead with a pair of strange companions and a set of bells for company. It sounds like the strangest thing ever but I implore anyone to read this book, I've recommended it to many and it is genuinely one of the best books I've ever read.
