A great addition to the Never series,, allowing you to understand where it all began
the series, felt a little on the lines of Belgariad the Sorceror, another epic spanning 7000 years in the first person, these told from a storyteller perspective but no less vast.
the end, i was gutted, would have liked an addittional 20 hours mr Rutherford
CJ Rutherford.s “in the Never” series
Hey if I am to take the time to review something you gonna get it wit 2 smoking barrels, (the perk of CJ not knowing where i live)
I start with the praise for his chosen narrator Katie Welburn
It is a breath of fresh air, to listen to the tones of someone who does not carry the garlic stench of a real strong accent. Allowing you to feel more involved with the characters, and her grasp at the We Irish accent made me believe she had even seen the commitments. all praise to the Narrator.
But to business, “the never” series. Lucky for me i was advised to start with prequel Origins, More a novella, but it got me hooked, so much so I continues straight onto Soles and Worlds.
From the innocent of Belfast to vast multi-worlds sounds a quandary however Its all here, with CJ’s Hometown of Belfast being the anchor that pulls this all together.
so i will summarise, “of the Never" are a compelling read, a fantasy sci fi with a little true love added. The development of its lead character (OMG its a woman) leaved the door open for some amazing continuations. The main additional characters begin life fooling me to believe they are Normal even bland, but pretty soon you have to open your mind to maximum as it seems CJ took a large dose of the Irish Pixy dust. “that escalated a little” came to mind as it fell into where i love a story to sit.
This book really cleared up a lot of the confusion from the Souls of the Never. It does a great job of introducing key characters int he series, and does so in a way that makes for a very enjoyable listen.
Tenybris was my favorite in this one. His development was reminiscent of that of Anakin to Darth Vader in Star Wars. Seeing him from the start and being able to see his slow fall, step by step, in a way that you could easily see how one or two small choices can change everything.
I really liked the way she portrayed each character and the amount of emotion she put into the reading. I had felt that her performance in Souls of the Never was a little over the top at times. I did not get any sense of that here. She took a good performance from Souls and perfected it for Origins.
Some friends drift farther apart than others.
This book is easy to listen to in a single sitting. I listened on a flight half way across the US, and did not feel rushed. It is one that I feel I could listen to again without losing any of the enjoyment from the first.
"Orgins of Never"
I loved this book. The characters give a new twist on good vs evil and I honestly feel myself rooting for the bad guy.
"Good Series Prequel"
I thought this was a really good prequel to the series. The one thing that I would note is that I think I appreciated it a lot more having read the entire series before coming back to this one. Even if this book actually takes place first chronologically, I would still recommend listening to at least one of the books in the series before listening to this one.
Narration was very good as usual with the rest of the series.
I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author, publisher, or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review. I was NOT required to write a positive review and this reflects my honest opinion of the work.
"Prequel to the Neverwars"
Elves, dragons, portals to other worlds, good versus evil. All the elements of a good read. This book is obviously the back story for a series but it does a good job of getting you interested in the series.
Brother vs brother, good vs evil. I have to go get the next book now.
I was given this audiobook in exchange for an honest review
"Olume & Tenybris Sitting in a Tree"
So opens the prequel to the Tales of the Neverwar. Okay, not really what is sounds like, but I couldn't resist.
This prequel tells the origins of two Elves, brought up together to be as close as brothers. One believes in using his magic to engage and encourage others to help, while the other excels at forcing others to do his will. Now imagine a world with an infinite number of parallel universes, a new one being formed each time a different decision is made (the many worlds theory) and between these worlds lies the Never. Throw in dragons, dwelves, faer, brownies & other magical creatures. Put them together along with an ancient evil and you have this engaging story.
Katie Welburn's uses timing and rhythm well but the voices for the different characters are not as distinct, BUT.. she does a good job showing the different character personalities which tells the listener who is speaking.

"An amazing prequel!"
It's hard to review this because it's only a novella but I will say that it's amazing!!!
In a world where magic and magical creatures are the norm and where the evil was vanquished centuries ago, 2 best friends live. The world they live in has no evil, no darkness. One man is great and one is letting the darkness in little by little when they fall for a girl and she chooses the first. Slowly the darkness takes controls and turns friend against friend. Tenybris turns as evil as possible and wants to conquer everything and everyone. Will he do it??
I pretty much devoured this. I loved the characters, I loved the plot, I loved the writing, so ya, this was amazing. A brilliant start for whats sure to be an amazing series!!
*I received a copy of this for review. This in no way affects my thoughts.*
The narrator did not overpower the story; a pleasing voice to complement, but not step over, the story.
Knowing this is a short origin story for a I really enjoyed watching the building of the characters.
This is my first Katie Welburn voice over performance. I am looking forward to hearing her other work.
The time went by very quickly and I did listen in one sitting.
This origin story definitely leads me to the main novel. I'm looking forward to the next listen! Katie Welburn did a fantastic job keeping the book moving forward and flowing for an enjoyable listen.
"Longest short story ever! LOL"
I only say its long because the timeline is long. The story itself was great. This usually isn't my type of book but I enjoyed it. Looking forward to starting the next book!
I really enjoyed this book and Katie Welburn brought it to life for me. This was such a great audio I ended up listening to it in one walk. I highly recommend.
"Every good villain needs an Origin ..."
I enjoyed learning how the wicked Tenebrys from Rutherford's later novels became as evil as he did, how he transformed from friend to fiend.
The first time Tenebrys intentionally killed.
I've listened to Souls of the Never - they're books in a series, so they're very similar and equally good.
Evil isn't born ... it has its Origins.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story, although I would recommend you read or listen to it before reading Souls of the Never. It clears up a lot of confusion if you read the series in order!
"great to listen to the origins of this series"
I loved this prequel. it helped explain the feud that I read in the souls of the never. I would read that one first. that way you have more connections to the story. this one puts pieces in that helps explain the Souls of the Never. Fascinating story with characters that you connect with, both good and sliding to the evil. the narrator rocks. she helps bring the story to life. I can not wait until the second book in this series is available in audio. I highly recommend this series.
