Summary

Rick Reilly has been a senior sports writer for Sports Illustrated for the past 17 years, and has been named "Sports Writer of The Year" seven times. Now, he pokes his nose into the world of golf. How does he do it? By caddying ("looping") for top players, celebrities, and some really bad run-of-the-mill golfers, Reilly gains insight into the minds of golfers, their winning or less-than-winning ways, and what they actually mutter when they're in the middle of play. Even though Reilly doesn't know a thing about actual caddying, Jack Nicklaus, David Duval, Tom Lehmann, Deepak Chopra, Donald Trump, Casey Martin, and a blind golfer let him fumble through the motions at their sides. The result is a hilarious book of wisdom and humor.

Critic reviews

"Hilarious misadventures, catty gossip, and downright embarrassing facts are only part of the appeal of this deftly written journal by Sports Illustrated writer Reilly....A truly funny, don't-miss read." ( Publishers Weekly)

So much more than golf!!!!!

It was interesting, funny and sad all at the same time. It sounds like a true story teller telling his number one story...

I realy enjoyed it, I look forward to listening to some of his other books.

Makes you laugh out loud on your own

The most amusing golf book I have ever listened to. I have now listened to this twice whilst driving (a car!) and the journey flies by. The stories are written with great observation and reveal unexpected sides to the famous. If you like to be entertained and love golf this is a must.............. be ready to laugh out loud even when you are on your own!

Enjoyable and Funny

I always wanted to see what a caddies life is like, and even though the book was fun to listen to, the reader only gets a 1 or 2 day perspective about caddying for about 6 different golfers (professional and amateur) in not very serious competitions. Its mostly about the hazing he gets from the players and the other full time caddies.

I recommend this if you want a light and funny story, but not if you are looking to see behind the locker room doors at the life of a caddy (cant wait until Steve Williams writes his book)

Short but felt extremely long

The writer never got into the caddy world and therefore has no real interesting things to tell.
A lot of hear say.
Waste of money.

Cringe worthy, but interesting from a historic perspective

I read this book a good 10 years ago and thought I'd give it a listen. I had to This book is a perfect illustration of just how much the world has changed (needed to change, and still needs to change) in the past few years. It reeks of a male dominated society where misogyny and old fashioned "locker room talk" was not only accepted, but the norm. Reading this in 2018, makes it a cringe worthy experience. The narrator does a perfect job of living up to this theme, but it only makes it the harder to listen to. Having said all that, the book does contain some really interesting short stories about some of the game's colorful characters, so if you can stomach all the "humour", you will gain a few insights into some golfing greats.
