New York Times Bestseller*

A momentous look at the private companies driving the revolutionary new space race, from the 3-million copy, New York Times bestselling author of Elon Musk

In 2008, Elon Musk's SpaceX became the first private company to build a low-cost rocket that could reach orbit. Suddenly Silicon Valley, not NASA, was the epicentre of the new Space Age. Start-ups and investors began to realise that the heavens - ungoverned and unregulated - were open for business.

When the Heavens Went on Sale tells the remarkable, unfolding story of this frenzied race to control access to outer space. Ashlee Vance follows four pioneering companies - Astra, Firefly, Planet Labs and Rocket Lab - as they attempt to launch thousands of low-cost rockets and satellites into orbit. While the space tourism ambitions of billionaires such as Bezos and Branson make headlines, these under-the-radar companies are striving to monetise Earth's lower orbit; to connect, analyse and monitor everything on Earth.

With unprecedented access to private company headquarters, labs and top-secret launch locations - from the US to New Zealand, Ukraine to India - Vance presents a gripping account of private jets, communes, gun-toting bodyguards, drugs, espionage investigations and multimillionaires guzzling booze as their fortunes disappear.

This is the most pressing and controversial technology story of our time, a tale of fascinating characters chasing unimaginable stakes. Welcome to the new Wild West above the clouds.

Compelling, entertaining, insightful

This is a great reading of a wonderful book. The detail is authentic, the stories are relevant and often very funny, and the way Vance weaves his experiences with some of the central figures in the development of the space industry over the past five years into a coherent story will leave you with a better and deeper understanding of the world we are living in.

We want more Space

When I saw that Ashlee had a new book coming out covering Space startups I was all ears. Having read his book ‘Elon Musk’, I knew it would be well researched and a good read. What I wasn’t so sure about was the companies that he picked, I knew who they were, but would it make for a compelling story? Answer, 1000% yes. They make for a perfect mix of the incredibly fast paced and cutthroat world of Commercial space. And when describing a rocket launch the real action is behind the scenes with the people burning the candle at both ends desperately trying the be the first and the fastest. The rocket nerds, the Silicon Valley money, the Visionaries, and the downright maniacs make for at times a very funny story. These I believe are the trailblazers, thousands of companies will follow them into space, Commercial space is here to stay and it’s only going to get busier. Wonderful book, beautifully read which flows so well, one of my favourite Space books so far.

Another slice of the space pie 👍

I enjoyed this book, and its look at the other players.

It sounds like Max got crapped upon, but hopefully it came good in the end.
