Summary

Long ago, the Cyberat left Earth to co-evolve with machines. Now, led by the powerful dictator Castron, their Old Guard believe that machines should replace the physical body. But these beliefs are upended with the arrival of the human Polity – and their presence ignites rebellion.
Piper was raised as a weapon against the Cyberat, implanted with secretive hardware. When his parents are captured by the Old Guard, the Polity offer him unexpected aid. Piper knows the Polity want more from him, but at what cost? The rebellion also attracts the deadly prador, placing an entire world in peril.
As war rages across the planet, Piper must battle with the unknown technology implanted in his bones. It may be the Polity’s answer to their relentless fight against the prador. It could also be civilization-ending Jain tech – or something far more extraordinary.

a good start
It starts well and the characters are well built but half way through it becomes a kind of self obsessed story of the main chap, overly detailed about what he's doing and how he's doing it and the story disappears.

Lost the plot
The whole book is written from the sole perspective of the main character and is essentially a coming-of-age story against the backdrop of the polity universe and, specifically, the Prador war. Repetitive detail on emotional turmoil and technology are long-winded and the novel lacks any real plot.

Asher does it again
Lovers of Neal Asher's writing will not be disapointed with this latest romp featuring a previously unexplored facet of humanty and our favourite crustacean-like foe; the Prador.
One premis for the plot didn't quite ring true for me, given the risk that Jain tech poses to all who contact it, but it wasn't enough to spoil an otherwise great, fast-paced, action-packed yet introspective, character-led adventure.
Peter Noble remains the arch-duke of narration.

Return to form
Much improved on his last two books and well read but my initial fascination of the Polity universe and joy in the characters of Ian Cormac and Penny Royal just isn’t being reignited.
