Rupert promised he was going to come back. All Florence had to do was wait.

Cornwall, 1944

When Rupert Dash is declared missing, presumed dead during the Battle of Arnhem, his wife, Florence, is devastated. She can’t accept that he has gone from her life forever, and so when she finds a poem called ‘Wait for Me’ hidden in an old book, she believes it’s a sign from her husband. A promise that he will return to her.

London, 1988

Since childhood Max has suffered from a recurring nightmare. Surrounded by the horrific chaos of World War Two, he has an urgent mission he knows he must complete. But time after time, the dream ends with him awaking in terror, his heart pounding from the horror of the battlefield. Desperate to understand why he is haunted by such terrible visions, Max embarks on a journey that leads him to Cornwall and a man named Rupert Dash.

Australia, 1995

Disappointing

The story started well and I found the subject intriguing. The narration was good. Unfortunately, for me the last quarter of the story seemed to lose momentum and the conclusion rushed and implausible.

Very moving story

I wasn’t sure about this book at the beginning but I was soon enthralled by it and couldn’t stop listening to it. Beautifully written and narrated the subject something I hadn’t touched on before. I was in tears on several occasions and the poem used was simply beautiful. I’ll definitely be recommending to my friends.

Disappointing from a usually great author

I loved Florence and the Dash family characters and wish that the whole story had just been about them and the war years. Then it would have been a good story! The reincarnation storyline was trite, boring and predictable and the Max, Elizabeth (what a caricature!) and Robyn story was much weaker. I usually love Santa Montefiore’s books but this wasn’t as good as usual. The female narrator was good, but the male one overdid it a bit. Shame, as Florence and Rupert had the potential to be the central characters in a really good story!

Absolutely Beautiful Story

I’ve really enjoyed this book, historical, spiritual, love ….. it’s all included and written so beautifully. The narrators are excellent, multiple voices and totally bring each character to life spanning decades, so an eclectic mix of age groups. A book within a book! Was sad when it ended, I could have listened for hours more. Five stars from me.

Truly Lovely

This is a simply beautiful story by one of my favourite authors. It is very well written and the two narrators have done a very good job too. So very well worth downloading and listening to a story which is based on the true experiences of one of the author’s friends. I would really love for Santa Montefiore to write a sequel to this book.
