Summary
Unlock The Door - Beyond Sexual Abuse illuminates thirty-nine stories of personal strength, courage, and resiliency. The author vividly captures the traumatic and lifelong effects of sexual abuse in her in-depth interviews. Topics include: Family Secrets, Trusted Others, To Punish-To-Protect, A Time To Heal, Advocacy and the audiobook also includes songs, about sexual abuse, written by the author.
The way to begin resolving trauma is to talk about it, to bring it to the light of day. As one of the contributors in Unlock The Door states, "When one person's words flow and another person listens, magic happens." In this book people speak and we, the audience, listens. And we must listen.
Best-selling author Gabor Maté M.D. wrote the powerful foreword. The main theme in the book is the focus on healing and moving beyond victimization as well as educating others about this devastating social issue. Survivors of sexual abuse often feel isolated and alone, Unlock The Door gives a voice to those who have not yet spoken, by allowing us to remember that we are not alone.
"Deb Maybury provides validation and hope to survivors whose lives, through no fault of their own, have been shaken body and soul. Her writing is terse, her point sharp and abundantly clear. Victims need a justice system that better serves their needs and more services capable of supporting their journey to wellness." (Dr. Fred Matthews, Psychologist)

We need to listen to these courageous people
First, I want to commend the brave people who bared their souls while sharing their stories in this audiobook. Second, I want to thank the author for putting together such a professional audiobook where it felt like I was sitting down with each of the 39 people and listening to an intimate account of their personal story. I must say that it was difficult for me to listen to all their stories because no child should have to endure what they went through. But their resilience was inspiring and the information they shared from what they’ve learned in their healing journey will benefit others that have suffered from abuse. Thank you Deb Maybury for being the messenger of Unlock the Door and putting together this collection of wisdom.

There's no healing without speaking up
Sometimes trauma makes you think that you can get over it if you just work hard enough, ignore it enough, or focus on other things, but this book reminded me of something I found out the hard way - the way to heal is first to speak up. These stories are gut-wrenching and I cried more than I care to admit. But I have also learnt so much about sexuality and how it interweaves with every other area of life. I've learnt that healing is possible. And that's the reason I recommend this book to anyone who has a 'dark' sexual past.
