Summary

Nothing to lose…

When nineteen-year-old Tommy Carter throws away a promising career to work for local villain Davey Abbott, everyone thinks he’s made a huge mistake - collecting debts and working in strip clubs is no life for a young lad just starting out in life.

Everything to gain.

A brutal fighter, Tommy quickly earns a reputation for himself – feared and respected by everyone - and becomes Davey’s trusted right-hand man. But when Davey is murdered Tommy is shocked to learn that Davey has left his entire business empire to him.

Tommy’s the boss now.

No one believes Tommy will succeed. But there is only one rule Tommy Carter lives by - always back the underdog. Because Tommy is on the way up.

This book was previously published as Barking Boy.

Another gripping gangland read by Kerry Kaya. Perfect for fans of Kimberley Chambers, Martina Cole, Heather Atkinson and Caz Finlay.

Narration spoilt it for me

The look of the “cover” makes it look like a modern crime book but it’s clearly set in the early 90’s but with Pauline Fowler narrating it sounded like it was set in the 60’s.

Why they choose a woman narrator for a book where the lead characters are men baffles me. Ok
There are a few lead women in the book but I personally can’t see why they don’t have a man and a woman narrating.

The story’s good if you can get past that it sounds like it’s set in 1960 and you’ve got it in your head that it’s a modern book.

Loved It

What a great story. I can’t wait to read more. Love the narrator. I’ve heard her before and she never lets us down. Can’t agree with the person who thought it should have been narrated by a man. Annie Aldington is the dogs what sits when it comes to narrating.

welcome to Martina Cole

This book, different strands of plotlines, brilliant. This is on par with Martina Cole and Roberta Kray.

Gritty

Not my usual type of read, but I really enjoyed it, good humour at times, and fierce east end loyalty
