Summary

A shocking crimeA mansion filled with suspects

Ruth Van Rydock can’t shake the feeling that something terrible is going to happen to her sister at Stonygates house.

Her old school friend Jane Marple decides it’s time to pay a visit.

But this grand Victorian mansion isn’t just a family home – it’s also a correctional facility for wayward young men.

And when something terrible does indeed happen, Miss Marple must face her most eccentric cast of suspects yet.

Never underestimate Miss Marple

entertaining and light

a typical Christie...I enjoyed the plot and Emilia Fox narrates so well... an easy listen...one for bed time or a tedious journey

Enjoyable but not the best Agatha Christie

Another solid Agatha Christie story and generally well performed by Emilia Fox - although occasionally her 'Male' voices (especially American) are a little strange. It is a good story but not one Agatha Christie's best, a bit of a 'pot boiler'.

Loved it!

Reviews weren’t that good so I wasn’t sure about this tittle - but it didn’t disappoint at all ! Another classic - I really enjoy Emilia Fox narration, her tone and character variation are paired so well with Agatha Christie’s story telling.

Typical Agatha Christie

Standard Agatha Christie, not my favourite but it's still a good story and well plotted and written.
Emilia Fox is a decent narrator, she does overdo a few of the voices though, makes them maybe a little like caricatures, would probably work well reading children's books.

Typically Christie

Great storyline, which keeps you guessing right until the end. Brilliantly read as usual. Can’t wait for the next story.

Good plot but long winded.

Having recently listened to a radio dramatisation of this book I realised that I was not familiar with the story. On the whole the narrator was good but the American accents required for four key roles were odd, at times sounding Welsh. I expected this book to be read by Joan Hickson, as advertised. Emilia Fox, needed to voice a range of characters and did well. The plot was clever but overlong. In that respect, the condensed version of the radio play was better. I am interested to know the age of Jane Marple. Apparently, she is portrayed as older than her actual years. A frail old lady she is not. But, perhaps at the time this was written perceived old age was younger. I found some of the attitudes jarring but in keeping with the thoughts of the time. I tended to listen to this recording at night; I frequently drifted off and had to 'rewind'. Overall, a recommended listen with some weaknesses.

Good story, weird narration

What did you like best about They Do It with Mirrors? What did you like least?

The story is excellent; good characters, good plot, really good writing.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Emilia Fox?

Probably not. She has a very peculiar style of reading - she makes half the characters talk so slowly that they sound completely stupid. The police inspector, for example, is supposed to be a pretty on-the-ball chap, but with Emilia Fox's reading, he sounds as though he barely knows how to speak, let along think. It's very disappointing.
