Summary

AN AMAZING THRILLER FROM TERRY HAYES.
If, like Kane, you're a Denied Access Area spy for the CIA, then boundaries have no meaning. Your function is to go in, do whatever is required, and get out again - by whatever means necessary. You know when to run, when to hide - and when to shoot.
But some places don't play by the rules. Some places are too dangerous, even for a man of Kane's experience. The badlands where the borders of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan meet are such a place - a place where violence is the only way to survive.
Kane travels there to exfiltrate a man with vital information for the safety of the West - but instead he meets an adversary who will take the world to the brink of extinction. A frightening, clever, vicious man with blood on his hands and vengeance in his heart...

A spy thriller that morphs into the unbelievable and ridiculous
Halfway through this novel I decided to buy I am Pilgrim I was enjoying it so much - real boys own, 007, with pace and excitement. But after some unbelievable antics and tech in part 3 - which were more reminiscent of an early Bond movie script - I began to struggle with it.
Then came part 4. Why the author chose this direction is anyone’s guess. It’s not just the change of genre but the sheer preposterousness of the storyline.
A real shame.

Weird, unbelievable and not what I was expecting!
I Am Pilgrim made some sense, but this made none. Started out as a novel about an Islamic terror attack and then morphed into a far fetched science fiction story with an impossibly capable CIA agent, a time travelling submarine and alien viruses causing a zombie apocalypse. Luckily our hero sorted it all out and then they all got to live happily ever after, except the bad guy. He got his comeuppance, naturally!

The length of the book
This book was a horrific read. I don’t know why I finished it probably just of a personal achievement. I could not recommend this book to anyone. It was frankly terrible.

The story is fantastic. Every bit as good as I Am Pilgrim. please don't make us wait another 10 years for the next book!
Extremely well read. Loved all the small details that all rang true. The futuristic parts were slightly unnerving at first but made for a terrific story.

Good start, terrible end
It started as expected for the first two thirds and I was enjoying it. I had heard about the descent into sci-fi, but I like sci-fi, so thought I might enjoy it. I didn’t. It was ridiculous, full of cliche’s and impossible coincidences. I finished it, but because of the turn the story had taken, I couldn’t engage properly. Terry Hayes probably should have stopped at I Am Pilgrim.

Twists and turns from incredible to outright bizarre
I loved the first half of the story - it was a detailed, fast paced spy thriller and I was utterly captivated. It somehow then morphed into a Sci-fi novel which angered me initially. I kept going with it and then somehow found myself living it again. Despite the huge change, it is so well written and the characters are so complex, I loved it again. Having just finished it I am very pleased with the book - well worth the wait following I Am Pilgrim.

An odd tome indeed
Really not sure what to make of the last 29 hours. A challenge to listen to at times. For me this is a précis of three separate books. At times I felt as if I was being pitched a script for a movie.
Entertaining, sadly not compelling.
