Summary

What will separate you from the rest early in your career? The ability to take ownership, manage expectations, navigate people dynamics, and communicate professionally - skills that school doesn't teach.

Most career guides assume that you already know how the working world works. But if you're starting your very first job or taking a job in a new company, you might not know all the unspoken rules that determine who gets ahead and who doesn't. In The Unspoken Rules, you'll learn the basic workplace skills necessary for success.

From the author: "Over the last four years, I've interviewed over 500 interns, early career professionals, managers, and executives.... My conversations revolved around three key topics:

  • What are the most common mistakes early-career professionals make at work?
  • What would you do differently if you could relive your first years on the job?
  • What do you think separates top performers from mediocre ones?

After testing the advice I gathered from these hundreds of interviews, I started coaching other early-career professionals. Now I'm distilling everything I've learned into a step-by-step guide called The Unspoken Rules."

The value of this book is "priceless"

Every young professional, student, parent, educator, mentor should have a copy of this to refer to when planning someone's career. There's a chapter for every step from recruitment through to resignation. As someone who is privileged enough to have already picked up most of the rules discussed in this book, it still took nearly a decade working at two top of industry institutions and a lifetime learning from the best business leaders and being raised by one for these learnings to crystallize. This book could be a game changer for college education and career counseling in many countries and could level the playing field where privilege creates unequal opportunities. The book sets the reader up for success, is easy to navigate, is written concisely with illustrative sample, and contains very helpful illustrative figures in the accompanying pdf. As an experience mentor to young people, I plan to start gifting these to my mentees.

Exceptional book

This is a must read for not only aspiring professionals, but also mid-career executives and business leaders. Gorick has done a fantastic job of collating lessons learned from high performers like himself and distilling them down to the key points that are most important in accelerating career growth.
