  • Summary

  • In 2021, scammers stole $16 million from thousands of investors across the globe, by capitalising on the hype around NFTs and the success of the hit Netflix series Squid Game.

The scam was so believable, the BBC, Yahoo and CNBC covered its initial trading success, before later publishing headlines revealing the full scale of the fraud. Investigative technology journalist Janhoi McGregor takes a deep dive into the murky underworld of Crypto and NFTs, to attempt to uncover the true identity of the squid scammer. Much of their web trail was wiped out, but digital detective Janhoi follows the crumbs left behind in an attempt to find justice for the victims.

Great listen

I love how this series is edited and the use of ambient sounds as well as the vocal content. It makes you feel like you’ve got the telly on in the background and makes you feel much more involved than the standard podcast using just voice content

Interesting, gripping, well presented and made

I recently had the pleasure of listening to "The Squid Scam: Hunting the NFT Con Artists,"

Investigative journalist Janhoi McGregor opens up the emerging world of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and the potential for fraud and deception in this new and rapidly growing market. Through meticulous research, expert interviews, and engaging storytelling, McGregor explores the dark side of the NFT market and the individuals who exploited it for personal gain while destroying innocent people's lives.

Following the breadcrumb trail carelessly left by the scammer, we get closer and closer with each episode. I hope you are sitting down (inside joke)

Janhoi presents the story in a fantastic way that keeps the listener enticed.
After reading someone's review about pronunciation and appealing to American audience, I have to wholeheartedly disagree. The British humor and accent are lost on some folks I guess.

Fantastic production. Kudos to Janhoi and the team.

Far too much padding!

The story was quite interesting to start with although as it turned out it was a huge anti climax at the end. Claiming a victory and vindication for an unfinished story putting us through 8 episodes of so much speculation about what might or could or should happen or go wrong or right in the investigation as well as the inevitable recap of previous episodes and lengthy explanation about what was coming up in the next episode I felt the whole saga should of been edited down to just a couple of episodes. We learnt about 10 minutes worth of new stuff in each waffling episode. It was a bit of an endurance listening through to the end and it just didn’t justify it, yet if it had been more succinct I know I would have enjoyed it instead of continuously shouting at him to “get on with the story!”

worth a listen

I didn’t know audible did podcast and this is a good find, the only reason I didn’t give it 5 starts is because I do think at times they build up to more than what they actually find

Bingeable!

Loved this podcast and binged it in 3 blocks of listening. Really interesting story, with all the potentially difficult/confusing bits explained and clarified in am entertaining way. Superb narration - looking forward to listening to more of Janhoi’s stuff.

Interesting enough story, poorly presented.

The investigative process itself is interesting, and it's impressive how things are tracked down, but the narrator presents as if he did everything - despite talking to various contacts throughout.
He also seems the only way to insert drama / indicate thinking / show any emotion is...with a...pause.
So basically interesting enough, but would have been vastly improved by being narrated by a professional, and scripted by someone unbiased.
