Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Another Word For Murder by Anthony Horowitz, read by Rory Kinnear.

Death, deception, and a detective with quite a lot to hide: the second novel in the bestselling series starring Private Investigator Daniel Hawthorne.

‘You shouldn’t be here. It’s too late…

These were Richard Pryce's last words, overheard moments before the celeb divorce lawyer was bludgeoned to death with a £3,000 bottle of wine.

Strange circumstances pile up. Pryce was teetotal, so why this bottle? Why those words? Why did the killer paint a number on his wall? And, most importantly, which of the man’s many, many enemies did the deed?

Baffled, the police are forced to bring in Private Investigator Daniel Hawthorne and his sidekick, the author Anthony, who’s really getting rather good at this murder investigation business.

But as Hawthorne takes on the case with characteristic relish, it becomes clear that he, too, has secrets to hide. Anthony knows they must be exposed – even at the risk of death…

Sherlock Holmes coudn't have done it better!

Having finished the first book in this series, I couldn't wait to start the second. I wasn't dissapointed. It is a briliant blend of the real world (the story starts on the set of Foyles War) and the ficticious. I loved the homage to Sherlock Holmes throughout the book and the clever mirroring of one of Conan Doyle's plots. The character of Hawthorne has become more intriguing and I look forward to finding out more about him in future novels.
Great narration, I especially liked the treatment given to Clara Grimshaw!

So well written and spoken

I really like the way that this is so up to date with so many references to things that are happening right now. Plenty of references to Foyle's War and Sherlock Holmes - love it!

Great story, lots of twists and so well read - what a performance!

Very good

Through all the twists and turns, the book was compulsive listening. Very well written and read The descriptions of people brought them alive immediately. The same was true of the descriptions of London or the weather or Yorkshire.....
Strongly recommend.

A depressing book, and a little predictable.

Bad: the voice given to the female police officer was over the top; two major clues (one very early on) were so obvious it spoiled the rest of the book; one female protagonist was cartoon like in her appearance and behaviour; the very last section was extremely depressing and unnecessary.
Good: the rest of the voices; the mystery of Hawthorne's life; the odd insights as to how Horowitz writes and adapts his work; there must have been more as I listened (on a long journey) until the end, but I can't think of specifics.

Simply brilliant

As with the first in this series, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this. Really well crafted whodunnit with great characters and excellent performance from Rory Kinnear. A must for any fans of Robert Galbraith as I think the style of writing is very similar.

good

This was the first book by Horowitz that I have read so I wasn't sure what to expect. Good complex plot that kept me engaged. Narration overall good but the portrayal of female voices was mixed. I will come back for more.

Loved the second Hawthorn novel

A really good story and as before, the enigma that is Daniel Hawthorn is so interesting to follow and guaranteed you will not work it out before him!
Rory Kinnear’s narration is first class

Second in series up to standard of the first

Two main characters develop in an intelligent plot. Rory Kinnear rises to the challenge of a range of characters.
