Summary
The rediscovered gem following a farmer's thoughtful and moving observations of her herd and the intelligence of cows.
Cows are as varied as people. They can be highly intelligent or slow to understand; vain, considerate, proud, shy or inventive. Although much of a cow's day is spent eating, they always find time for extracurricular activities such as babysitting, playing hide-and-seek, blackberry picking or fighting a tree. This is an affectionate record of a hitherto secret world.

I wasn't sure to start off with...
...but by the end, I wish there was more! I will be looking for more of her books, and will be looking up the author and the farm.

Very interesting
You learn that cows really are fascinating, beautiful creatures, I grew up very scared of them. that has had quite an impact on my life. I listened to this book and that fear has pretty much gone. I mean I wouldn't walk in a field of them still, but I stroke them now and talk to them.

Eye opening
The book opens your mind to a world many of us don’t get to experience nowadays and allows a reconnection and appreciation for not only the food that you eat but all life you see around you. If you’re looking to improve your lifestyle and overall happiness this is a book to read.

Firm and upright in the tornado of agriscience and pulling the tail of the species who uniquely hasn't got one.

Learnt so much
I'm a firm believer in holistic treatment of animals and their husbandry and this lovely memoir reinforced that. Animals are so much more complex the we understand and are often much better off when we interfere as little as possible.

Well worth reading
I loved this book and I read the whole thing in one day. It's a surprisingly interesting and moving collection of observations. I really enjoyed it and I think it will change the way I shop for food and the way I think of think of all animals.

Fascinating but reading is poor
This fascinating look at the inner lives of farm animals has made me completely revise my opinion of current farming and food production practices. As a long-time pet owner I am already aware of the differing personalities and intelligences possessed by a variety of dogs, cats and rabbits so I was not surprised to learn that farm animals posses those attributes too. I loved hearing the fascinating stories of individual animals but this book is not written as a story but rather a succession of anecdotes that are sometimes muddled, include wearisome lists of names and farming terms that are not explained but overall are fascinating.
Unfortunately the reader, who is also the author, has a harsh voice which is not pleasant to listen to. She also lacks the skill to deliver the narrative with the feeling it often deserves and reads as if she is delivering a lecture, which detracts from empathy the subject matter often warrants.
The Secret Life of Cows is a fascinating and important book that shows the listener how very wrong both factory farming and even the usual farming practices are. Hopefully everyone who reads or listens to it will change their eating habits to buy fewer, better quality animal products. Personally, already vegetarian, from now on I will only drink milk, eat eggs and cheese that come from organically farmed, free range animals.

I wish all farmers were like Rosamund, a must read for all those who care where their food comes from (which should be all of us)
