Summary
Good Morning America’s “27 Books for June"
PopSugar’s Best Summer Reads of 2021
A new novel by the author of The Henna Artist, a Reese's Book Club Pick
In New York Times best-selling author Alka Joshi’s intriguing new novel, henna artist Lakshmi arranges for her protégé, Malik, to intern at the Jaipur Palace in this tale rich in character, atmosphere, and lavish storytelling.
It’s the spring of 1969, and Lakshmi, now married to Dr. Jay Kumar, directs the Healing Garden in Shimla. Malik has finished his private school education. At 20, he has just met a young woman named Nimmi when he leaves to apprentice at the Facilities Office of the Jaipur Royal Palace. Their latest project: a state-of-the-art cinema.
Malik soon finds that not much has changed as he navigates the Pink City of his childhood. Power and money still move seamlessly among the wealthy class, and favors flow from Jaipur’s Royal Palace, but only if certain secrets remain buried. When the cinema’s balcony tragically collapses on opening night, blame is placed where it is convenient. But Malik suspects something far darker and sets out to uncover the truth. As a former street child, he always knew to keep his own counsel; it’s a lesson that will serve him as he untangles a web of lies.

exquisite
The conclusion is really nice. Malik turned out quite alright. it plays out corruption, deceit, loyalty and love. Love against the expectations of culture and society.
Nice narration.

A fair sequel. Not as good but good enough.
If you don't compare it with the Henna artist. it's a good read. Lots of repetition of the plot to carry people along I suppose.

beautifully written . the voice of Niimi was annoying, however, the other narrators made up for it. just a lovely story about India and some wonderful characters woven in.

Loved this book
I loved the continuity from the previous book, the story line, the intrigue and learning more about the Indian culture. Hopefully there is another book in this series.

Enjoyed this but a fair amount of repetition from book One
This is a good continuation from the first book and could be read stand alone. There’s a lot of repetition from Book One though it’s a completely different story.

Ok
I absolutely loved The Henna Artist and how Lakshmi made her way in life. Although it’s really good to hear what the main characters do next, this was a slightly disappointing sequel. The characters developed nicely but I found the main storyline a little slow and frustrating. But it’s always good to envelope myself in India!

beautiful 2nd book
This is a beautiful book which continues the life of Lakshmi, Malik and Radha.
The story is told from different view points of Lakshmi, Malik and Nimmi.
The story is full of emotions and events of each member of this story.
Lakshmi is married to Jay Kumar, the doctor of the community centre of Shimla.
Malik moved with Lakshmi and Radha to Shimla.
Radha later marries and moves to France. In this book she is not part.
Malik is in love with Nimmi.
Nimmi lost her husband and has 2 little children.
Lakshmi sent Malik back home to stay out of trouble in Shimla.
He is still young and Lakshmi brought him back to Shimla once he understood enough of life.
While he was back home he was learning a lot about construction.
A cinema was build and something terrible happened.
Lakshmi helped Malik to clear Mano's name.
I heartily recommend this read, many surprises and a lovely book to listen.
Next book will be the 3rd book which will be about Radha's life in France.
That is why she was purposely left out of this book as much as possible.❤
