Summary

Michael Palin's best-selling diaries before, during and after Monty Python.

Michael Palin's diaries begin when he was newly married and struggling to make a name for himself in the world of television comedy. But Monty Python was just around the corner....

Enjoying an unlikely cult status early on, the Pythons then proceeded to tour the USA and Canada. As their popularity grew, so Palin relates how the group went their separate ways, later to re-form for stage shows and the celebrated films The Holy Grail and Life of Brian. Living through the three-day week and the miners strike and all the trials of a peripatetic life are also essential ingredients of these perceptive and funny diaries.

Palin - never knowingly underfed!

I have consumed vast amounts of Python over the years from autobiographies and documentaries to books and beyond and thought there was nothing more to possibly know. How wrong could I have been. Utterly absorbing and a must for any Python completist.

Riveting

I started with Travelling to Work, amazing then listened to Full Circle and was waiting for the extended Python Years and have just finished. So interesting on so many levels, the relationship between the "Pythons" how that changes, the making of the films which makes me remember all the memorable scenes and how often I am reminded how apt they are in life. As I get older I often find myself in the Holy Grail scene with the King and prince and trying to get the guards to do as they are told......

Just downloaded the next 29 hours of the eighties and cannot wait to get started.

If you like to listen this is a must.

A Twitch Upon A Thread

Apologies to Evelyn Waugh, but Michael Palin recollections of the 70s snap you back in a instant to times when 'alternative' comedy was like a kick up the arse of the establishment (beautifully inferred as being all things akin to the BBC). if you lived through the seventies you'll be proud of the fact that you were in the same era as the Python crew. if you didn't, then listen and laugh as you learn about some of the wonderful characters and events that shaped the baby-boomers. Then go and watch Life of Brian. unless you've been a very naughty boy (or girl, or define yourself as a lamppost). Fabulous.

Fantastic

Immensely entertaining and well read by Mr P - bit like a warm hug! Having lived through the 60’s and 70’s brings back some if not distant memories of those times - highly recommended

A nice middle-class man

Credit to Michael Palin for providing the insight and narrating his own diaries. He provides a background to Monty Python that only an insider could bring. He seems to chafe a little against the nice middle class man he is commonly described to be, but that’s exactly how he comes across. A Hampstead socialist with a lot of unacknowledged advantage - meetings at the BBC that would be beyond most - and many descriptions of meals - “beef with an unexceptional sauce”. The person who comes through in the diaries is a decent chap who had the opportunity to make us laugh. And he did it very well.

Brilliant 👏

I absolutely loved this audiobook by Micheal Palin. He is a real favourite of mine, in whatever he does. I highly recommend this audiobook. Micheal's voice is a treat to hear. His Monty Python years had me smiling all the way through.
