Summary
Brave, funny and honest, columnist Sophie Beresiner takes us on her complex journey to parenthood and shows us that there’s more than one way to become a mother.
Sophie’s journey to motherhood began aged 30 with a cancer diagnosis that stole her fertility. Today, Sophie is older (40), wiser (and agonisingly excellent at hindsight) and somewhat battered. Through interminable cycles of hope and failure, her infertility story spanned three countries, five surrogates and a debt she’d rather not dwell on.
Part memoir, part manifesto, The Mother Project is the epic story of Sophie’s quest for happiness. Exploring the complexities, expectations and injustices faced by millions of women across the world, it is a book that is both personal and universal.
Critic reviews
“Impossible to put down, makes you laugh and cry, Sophie’s story is inspirational. It gives us so much hope and encouragement. I don’t think we would be where we are on our own journey without her advice.” (Ollie Locke)
“A read so twisty your heart pounds as you turn the pages.” (The Sunday Times)

Agonisingly beautiful
Couldn’t stop listening. It is hard to truly imagine what it is like to go through everything Sophie and Mr B have gone through
, yetSophie manages to take you on the surrogate journey right along with her. The waiting and ups and downs are agonising, excruciating even (so much so that I finished this book in only two sittings....no 2 week wait for this girl!). Thank you for sharing your extraordinary journey of hope, resilience and never ever giving up!!!

A wonderful account of hope
A wonderful account of hope and the strength of the human spirit. A story of love and holding on even when it feels hopeless. A privilege to listen to this couples strength and resilience. I couldn’t put this down. A very emotive account of the desire to be parents and the lengths that some face to achieve this. A real testament to the love, strength and determination of this couple. A wonderful story that pulled at my heartstrings. Thankyou for sharing.

An incredible journey written by an incredible woman!
I’ve been following Sophie’s column in The Times from the very beginning when I was re-diagosed with breast cancer, knowing if I made it, I’d be following in her footsteps. This book is everything I’d hoped for and more. It’s full of heart, information and inspiration. Throughout the book, even though I knew of the happy ending, I cheered Sophie and Mr B on, cried and laughed with them. Sophie thank you for sharing your most precious story so others like me can follow on the path you have lit for us.
