Summary
The Mercer house is the perfect place for Chef Lindsey's restaurant - or so Lindsey thinks. The house's horrific past would make anyone run, but Lindsey is not aware of the gruesome events that occurred there on Halloween many years ago.
Lindsey's dreams soon turn into nightmares as strange sounds are heard, cigar smoke makes her choke, and apparitions of a ghastly man and weeping woman appear, threatening her.
And when Halloween approaches, Lindsey knows she must fight for what is hers or lose the Mercer house, and her dreams, forever. Can Lindsey take back what is hers before she loses everything - even her life?

A taut, tense horror novella
This is a spooky little treat of a listen. Anyone looking for something scary to listen to when the cold winter nights draw in should look no further. Energetically read by Sean Duregger, Bates' tale is a little gem that is guaranteed to send shivers up the spine.

Meh!
This is a quick read, but it left me wanting more.
The plot was very much telling and not showing. It's told in a very matter of fact way and I felt there was no tension, no mystery to enjoy. I felt very much "meh" about the whole thing and at no stage was it scary or spooky which was disappointing. It also felt rushed and I couldn't connect to the characters, but I still finished it and would read this author again in the hopes that this was one of her earlier works!
Sean Duregger was easy to follow and listen to. He was clear and his tone and cadences were good,
I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

Time to go.
The basic plot line of this short story might hold a modicum of merit but is so bland!y written that it is hard to feel even a tickle of pity for the poor abused beautiful girl who is at the heart of this, nor believe in the cigar smoking (so he must be bad) central villain, who all but twirls his moustaches in the manner of the silent screen baddy as he places his bound victim across the railway trzcks. Perhaps the author's intention was to numb their readers into a sense of total immobility in order to pounce at the ending. Who knows?
The narration, on the other hand, was good. Sean Duregger's voice was pleasant on the ear and he read clearly, with good intonation. But it wasn't enough to lift the story or make it believable or even sinister.
