Summary
The New York Times best-selling author of 'Til Death Do Us Part transports listeners to 1930s California, where glamour and seduction spawn a multitude of sins.
At the exclusive Burning Cove Hotel on the coast of California, rookie reporter Irene Glasson finds herself staring down at a beautiful actress at the bottom of a pool. The dead woman had a red-hot secret about an up-and-coming leading man, a scoop that Irene couldn't resist. Seeking the truth about the drowning, Irene finds herself drawn to a master of deception.
Once a world-famous magician whose career was mysteriously cut short, Oliver Ward is now the owner of the hotel. He can't let scandal threaten his livelihood, even if it means trusting Irene, a woman who seems to have appeared in Los Angeles out of nowhere four months ago. With Oliver's help Irene soon learns that the glamorous paradise of Burning Cove hides dark and dangerous secrets. And that the past - always just out of sight - could drag them both under.

A bit too complicated?
Too many twists and too many characters. I lost track of characters in the middle. I did finish it though.

Irritating narrator
I am English but I found the accent irritating and the American accents worse. It was a real effort to listen to and completely spoiled the story.

An easy light read.
This is an easy read. Written with a light touch and fast pace so that you tend to ignore the implausibilities or the slightly clunky double plot.
This is fun escapism, romance and glamour in 1930s Hollywood with a backdrop of murder and scandal.
Although the era is new for this author the story remains much the same sort of fare. However it is none the worse for that as romantic suspense is her forte.
Definitely worth reading for those who like this genre.
May 2020:-
I have just listened to the audio version of this and it was very good. The Narrator was easy to listen to and did reasonably well with the voices and the distinction between characters. - There was just one niggle about the format- there were quite long pauses between chapters which ruined the flow. Overall though would recommend this as a good listen for fans of historical romance but I can't vouch for the accuracy or the depiction of the setting.

Entertaining and unusual
Really enjoyed this book. Great story with lots of plot twists. The ending few chapters were particularly interesting.

The story improved but the narrator didn’t…
I stuck with it because the storyline was ok actually… but the narrator… she was, I don’t want to say awful because that’s just mean, but she was pretty bad. Her idea of acting out the narrative was to shout as angrily as she could… Maybe they should re record this book with a different narrator.. it would do possibly much better.

Good story but terrible narration
This book had an interesting premise - a double mystery, with a love story thrown in. However, the narrator’s accents and stilted delivery made it hard work to listen to. I found I was more distracted by the accents - all the women sounded hard bitten and rough, all the men like something from a 1930s B movie - than the story and in the end I wished I had read it myself rather than listened on audible
