Summary

Lesser Tribune Marcus Venandus, Legion officer exemplar, was exiled to the disease-ridden hell hole known as the Fire Islands as punishment for the failed political machinations of his father. While the days of the powerful witchdoctor kings throwing skeletal armies against the shields of the legion have faded into history, all is not right at the edge of the world. Unrest is boiling once again as long dead darkness seeps back into the islands. With the legion more concerned with its personal rivalries than with its duty, it will fall to Marcus and his small, highly disciplined, command to put the horrors of the past back in their graves, and literally save Aquila from a fate worse than death.

Good story.

I like the story, with it's melting pot of cultures with some characters so blind to how others feel and the plans that fall and then fall apart.

A Good Listen!

I enjoyed the energy and accuracy of detail that went into writing and production of this audiobook. The fighting scenes were especially well described and had me feeling as if I was watching the scene play out in front of me like an epic movie.

The story moves along with a good pace, setting the scene before moving forward to the main conflict where characters came to true light, and surprises were added to the mix, making the listening experience all the more thrilling.

I enjoyed the narration and various sound effects, which added to the story's atmosphere, and the voices were well executed. My only complaints have to do with the varying recording levels and echo-factor, which disturbed the fluidity of my listen. The announcements/reminders of what I was listening to were rather annoying and seemed somewhat out of place in an audiobook.

Altogether, this was a good one but could have been even better.
