Summary

For the first time ever, the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society has produced an audio recording of all of Lovecraft's stories. These are not dramatizations like our Dark Adventure Radio Theatre - rather, this is an audiobook of the original stories, in all-new, never-before-heard recordings made by the HPLHS' own Andrew Leman and Sean Branney exclusively for this collection. Working from texts prepared by Lovecraft scholar S.T. Joshi, this collection spans his entire career from his earliest surviving works of childhood to stories completed shortly before his death. All tales include original music by HPLHS composer Troy Sterling Nies. This audio bonanza features 74 stories adding up to more than fifty (50!) hours of Lovecraftian listening fun, professionally performed and recorded for your enjoyment.

Why the hell does it double up on every chapter

Right, so for me it feels like they're trying to fake the amount of time they have for the whole collection or somethingn, kinda annoying. if this happens for anybody else then please help me rave about this haha

Amazing

I don’t see what everyone is complaining about the narrators voice and flow as I can follow the stories very clearly. As for HP Lovecraft all his work is top class and amazing well worth the credit

amazingly done

The massive amount of Lovecrafts stories and the brilliant voice work makes this a must buy, for myself and any lovecraft fan at the very least.

Absolutely recommend this title to anyone who enjoys horror and strange stories, or for people looking for something different.

Excellently narrated stories, troubling author

HP Lovecraft is both an amazing author and so very much a product of his time. Many of his attitudes, especially his racist ones, are intolerable now and are difficult to get past in some of his stories, but nonetheless he is a hugely influential author who wrote many classic weird tales.

This narrated version is spot-on, as you'd expect from the HP Lovecraft Historical Society. The tone, pacing and overall narration is excellent with subtle, effective use of the occasional SFX. It really is a top-notch audio collection.

If you can place him and his work in context and enjoy the good bits while enduring the less savoury elements then this is the best adaptation made with deep care and attention.

But you can't review his work without addressing the man, himself. HP Lovecraft was a troubled man, who struggled to live an 'ordinary' life and channelled his fears into his fiction. He was also a good friend and mentor to many writers. But regardless of that his archaic, and sometimes unpleasant views should not be ignored, and definitely should be challenged, but I think art can be more than just the artist, and rise above the limitations of the individual.

That said, though, I totally understand, and support, why many cannot get past that. If I hadn't started reading his works over thirty years ago and hadn't had numerous fun adventures in the Call of Cthulhu RPG, I'm not sure I'd be able to fully enjoy his work.

This was a difficult review to write for an excellent audio adaptation.

Hit or miss depending on what you like!

Really enjoyed a lot of the stories, especially mountains of madness, the colour from outer space and a few of the other shorter ones. Theres quite a few with very outward racism, and some with very subtle racism, so just bear in mind it was the 30s and he was probably not a nice person.

Narration wise, I thought Sean Branney was amazing, always got the tone perfect and had some great emotion. I liked Andrew Leman a lot less, so much so that I think he ruined a few of the stories with his accent.
