Summary

Clive Merrison stars as Holmes with Michael Williams as Watson in these 12 adventures from the unique, fully dramatised BBC canon of Conan Doyle's short stories and novels.

The 12 dramatisations are 'The Illustrious Client', 'The Blanched Soldier', 'The Mazarin Stone', 'The Three Gables', 'The Sussex Vampire', 'The Three Garridebs', 'The Problem of Thor Bridge', 'The Creeping Man', 'The Lion's Mane', 'The Veiled Lodger', 'Shoscombe Old Place' and 'The Retired Colourman'.

These short stories are the very last ones written by Arthur Conan Doyle about his much-loved fictional detective. Holmes and Watson are faced with cases that range from the suspicious to the seemingly supernatural, and they encounter characters as diverse as an evil Austrian adventurer, a formidable female criminal, a distinguished professor who is acting oddly and a mysterious tenant who refuses to show her face.

Gripping, suspenseful and hugely entertaining, these acclaimed dramatisations were adapted by Bert Coules from the original short stories. Among the guest cast are Hannah Gordon, Robert Glenister, Michael Troughton, Alexandra Bastedo, Harriet Walter, Douglas Henshall and George Cole.

Good dramatisations, sloppy editing

Twelve individual episodes, helpfully divided up by Audible not into 12 individual chapters but into hundreds, each about two minutes long. What on earth?

But these are very good adaptations with an excellentcast

Classic.

Always worth the money. Even if you have heard them always worth a second or third or fourth listen. Even my 5 year old has gotten into them and asks for them!! Crowd pleaser.

Great audio book

I love to this audiobook. Obviously a great storyline the only thing that I found a little annoying worth some of the foreign accents leaving a lot to be desired.

The Best Holmes

Clive Merrison is repeatedly overlooked on pollsfor best Sherlock Holmes. The audios are without doubt the best adaptations of Doyle's stories

Excellent Performances

Classic Conan Doyle stories beautifully performed by an outstanding cast. But, once again, the decision into chapters is inept and annoying. Chapters lasting 2 minutes and 38seconds, 4 minutes and 16 seconds etc. B****y infuriating!

A fitting end.

A wonderful end to the dramatised short stories. The writers, and especially Bert Coules, managed to take these stories, some of which were far from Conan Doyle's best, and enthused them with life, wit and drama. The Lion's Mane was a particular favourite. Merrison and Williams, are up there with the best for their portrayals of Holmes and Watson.
