Summary

Timid Renata Molloy is in mortal peril after overhearing details of a breathtaking conspiracy. But her courageous and near-identical cousin Jane Smith—homeless and just two-and-elevenpence away from the workhouse—is willing to take her place if it means a roof over her head and plenty to eat. So Jane, with the help of Captain Henry March of Scotland Yard, whose hand in marriage she once refused, finds herself incognito at stately Luttrell Marches, enmeshed in a mystery of secret formulae, political plots, and a maze of secret doors and secret passages …

A fun Girls' Own adventure

Very dated and not at all the same as the author's Miss Silver novels, but great fun. Our heroine helps to foil a dastardly anarchist plot, our hero has a stiff upper lip and there are tons of secret passages. Enjoy!

Disappointing

I have read and enjoyed many of Patricia Wentworth's Miss Silver series. Seeing that Audible are now starting to produce other Wentworth titles which don't feature Miss Silver, I thought I would give one a try. The Astonishing Adventure of Jane Smith is a very early work (1923) which is quite disappointing. The plot concerns secret passages, scientists and anarchist conspirators. Cheery enough, but all rather Enid Blyton jolly hockey sticks style story. I think I will return to Miss Silver ....
