Prima che il problema della disoccupazione, del surplus di braccia si manifestasse, Dick aveva già ipotizzato una soluzione grottesca e sarcastica: la gente in più che non serve al sistema economico mettiamola in ghiacciaia. Teniamola da parte. Forse ci serviranno un giorno, forse no, però se li mettiamo in cantina non se ne andranno in giro a prostituirsi, drogarsi, rubare, spacciare e chissà quante altre attività illegali. Teniamo desti solo quelli che servono, che lavorano e consumano. Quelli che fanno girare la macchina del capitale. Gli altri, a dormire. Così non dovremo ricorrere a misure estreme e impopolari (Eutanasia? Pena di morte?), e ce li saremo comunque tolti dai piedi. La questione del romanzo a ben vedere è tutta lì: cosa farne di questi uomini e donne in più, che guarda caso sono di colore (non necessariamente neri, anche nelle varie tonalità del marrone fino al caffelatte più sbiadito)? C'è un sistema che si fonda sui dormienti e su altre misure per tenere bassa la sovrappopolazione.
