Il fiume scorre lento e placido. C'è una donna sulla riva. Non sappiamo il suo nome, non sappiamo la sua storia: sappiamo solo che si è trasferita a Londra da poco e che occupa i giorni con lunghe passeggiate lungo il fiume Lea, che lambisce la periferia della città. Insieme a lei, lungo la riva, i personaggi più disparati: ebrei ortodossi, fruttivendoli tedeschi, un ex artista circense. E come le calme acque del Lea, scorrono anche i ricordi della protagonista: le sue reminiscenze delle fotografie e delle immagini del suo passato e dei fiumi che hanno segnato la sua vita.
Il Reno lungo cui è nata, il San Lorenzo nel grande nord, l'Hughli che sfocia nel Gange maestoso. Esther Kinsky si dimostra erede diretta di W. G. Sebald e della sua sensibilità per il paesaggio e le sue sfumature, in un romanzo che si fonde col memoir, in cui è impossibile scindere ricordo e invenzione letteraria, autrice e personaggi.
