Summary
An exquisite new short story from the Sunday Times bestselling author of Small Things Like These and Foster.
'A genuine once-in-a-generation writer.' The Times
After an uneventful Friday at the Dublin office, Cathal faces into the long weekend and takes the bus home. There, his mind agitates over a woman named Sabine with whom he could have spent his life, had he acted differently. All evening, with only the television and a bottle of champagne for company, thoughts of this woman and others intrude - and the true significance of this particular date is revealed.
From one of the finest writers working today, Keegan's new story asks if a lack of generosity might ruin what could be between men and women. Is it possible to love without sharing?
'Every word is the right word in the right place, and the effect is resonant and deeply moving.' Hilary Mantel
'Claire Keegan makes her moments real - and then she makes them matter.' Colm Tóibín

I had to stop 20 mins in…
Huge Claire Keegan fan but found her narration difficult to listen to. I will go buy the book instead.

Great Irish misogynistic love story
I bought this book at the back of listening to a review of it on The Women’s Podcast. They weren’t wrong! Really interesting story line. Hopefully these type of men are becoming few and far between.

Beautifully written
Evocative and poignant, This short story tells of a flawed character, and uncovers the primary reason for his dysfunction that means life and relationships can only be miserable unless he finds a way to recognise and address his shortcomings.

So disappointed!
I was really looking forward to listening to this title, so much so I pre-ordered it well in advance of publication. I have read and listened to all of the author’s previous work and loved it, so felt this would be a safe bet. Unfortunately there is no information about the narrator or a sample provided on pre-orders. I only managed to listen for ten minutes and could not continue, why oh why the author has chosen to read the book herself I really cannot fathom, her work is usually exquisitely narrated by professional readers. Sadly, I have returned the item to Audible but will none the less enjoy reading the kindle version of the work. However, I usually purchase both the kindle and Audible versions because in the past the readings have added another dimension to an already sublime piece of writing. I am disappointed to leave such a poor review for something I am aware that on the page will undoubtedly be a truly stunning piece of work.

Leaves you longing for more- sheer perfection
The absolute genius of Claire Keegan’s writing deserves every accolade. Every sentence, every word and comma are perfectly placed. She takes you quietly by the hand and lays life bare. Delicate and devastating in equal measures, this story takes a look at misogyny, generational trauma and the humanity at the core of it.

Gorgeous novella
Beautiful, brutal and dark. A shame there's only one story - I bought it on preorder and didn't realise how short it was. but the writing is so luminous I really dont mind. Gorgeous use of language.

Short but thought provoking!
A story based on the importance of love and respect being taught from birth! Brilliantly written and read by the author.
