L'area che, partendo dalle porte di Trieste, si estende lino a quelle di Salonicco rimane per molti, nella sua struttura storica e umana, una zona grigia, priva di una precisa fisionomia, simile a quelle terre inesplorate che gli antichi cartografi si limitavano a descrivere con uno sbrigativo "hic sunt leones". In realtà, quella fascià di territorio è da un millennio e mezzo teatro di un drammatico scontro di popoli, civiltà e religioni. Vi si insediarono, a partire dal VI-VII secolo, a seguito delle grandi migrazioni abbattutesi sull'impero romano, popolazioni slave da cui deriveranno tre grandi etnie: serbi, croati e sloveni.
Caratterizzati da consistenza demografica, storia, tradizioni, lingua e alfabeto diversi, croati e sloveni da una parte, serbi dall'altra sono stati divisi per secoli da due grandi formazioni imperiali, quella asburgica e quella ottomana, che hanno deciso del destino dell'Europa e del Mediterraneo. A ciascuna delle tre nazioni è dedicato un capitolo in cui le rispettive vicende -dalle origini ai giorni nostri - s'intrecciano con quelle di altri gruppi (bosniaci, montenegrini, abitanti del Kosovo e della Macedonia).
