Author Chris Pike's debut novel Unexpected World is a gritty and compelling survival tale about human courage and steadfast determination to live, to endure, and to persevere against all odds. Assistant District Attorney Dillon Stockdale is on the phone with his daughter when an EMP obliterates the entire electrical grid of the United States. Anything relying on a computer is fried, including the plane his daughter is on. Gripped with the terrifying realization the plane has crash-landed somewhere in the expansive and dangerous landscape of Louisiana's Atchafalaya Basin, Dillon sets out to rescue her before it's too late. A harrowing survival story with non-stop, pulse-pounding action, Unexpected World is a story of good vs. evil, of a complex narrative of fight or flight, and mind-bending choices resulting in profound consequences. Dillon Stockdale is determined, he's well-equipped, and nothing will stop him. Or will it?

I can't wait to hear the next instalment, really liking the fact this is around an EMP rather than a zombie apocalypse, straight into the nitty gritty and how fast people turn on each other. great narration by Kevin
"Preppers Vindicated or the New Dark Ages?"
An EMP attack disables all electrical systems in the U.S. (or at least in Texas and Louisiana). The story follows the path of a father searching for his daughter who was in a plane at the time of the bomb's detonation. Events are at times predictable, but not boring. The characters, sometimes, act contrary to what you would expect. An example is a when well educated defense lawyer reacts in an illogical manner. These inconsistencies smooth out farther into the story. The book is the first in a series and there is a cliffhanger ending.
I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator.
"Ending was terrible..."
I liked the connection with the man and his daughter. I also loved to court room drama
Best narrator on Audible
The ending was terrible. It isn't a mini series on TV, it is a book.
"Unexpected and pleasant find in a new series"
This was a very pleasant find. I was not familiar with Chris Pike but this book was an enjoyable listen. It has a solid relationship of the characters and the situation. The author does a very good job of introducing us to the characters and how they respond to a sudden EMP event.
This is a series so the author does not give the full storyline information away in the first book. There are questions to be answers and more adventures to come. I am looking forward to the next book.
As always, Kevin Pierce does an excellent job narrating this book and making it easy to listen to and follow along.

"Good book, glad I found it."
Sucked me in from the start. Nice to see an apocalyptic story that's not zombies! Hope to have an explanation on why the power went out in book two!
I thoroughly enjoyed this EMP survivour book! For such a shortish read, just about 5 and a half hours long, it packs a lot of plot and character development into it.
The plot was fast paced and engaging. Though that blasted ending annoyed me, I'll get to that in a minute!! Anyway, the book is about Dillon, whom, after an EMP attack, does all he can to reach his daughter. She was on a plane at the time of the attack and her plane went down in a bog. He believes in his heart that she is alive and, along with his co-worker, Holly, and a dog, he travels cross country to try to find Cassie. What follows is his struggle to cross a country gone mad with very little supplies and in time to save his daughter.
Character wise, all were well written and developed. I really admired Dillon and his determination to reach his daughter no matter what. He was resourceful, determined, capable and brave. He is somewhat prepared for an event like this, yet he isn't one of those extreme preppers.
Now onto the ending! *Sigh*, I hate cliffhanger endings, yet I tolerate them as I can understand that an author wants to keep the readers hooked, but I can't tolerate books that just end, not with a cliffhanger, but just ends. Seriously.... you will leave the ending like that!! Ugh. There were other ways to ending it without ending it so abruptly.
What else can I say about Kevin Pierce that haven't been said a thousand times!! He really does a story like this justice and always does a great job narrating any story he tells. I always enjoy his narration and ways recommend his work.
I received a free copy of this but voluntarily reviewed it. This in no way affected or influenced my thoughts.
"Survival of the prepared"
Great post crisis story. Not a zombie apocalypse but a tale of what happens when an emp strike occurs. Fate favors the prepared. Those who are ready will do well. Man as they say is only three days away from barbarism. Great read. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.
"Great start to a series"
Great start to a series. I really enjoyed this story. It pulls you in from the start and doesn't let go until the end. It was an entertaining, well written, interesting, engaging and enjoyable story. Definitely worth your time.
You never know where you will be when a disaster hits and your world changes.
When SHTF your child is hundreds of miles from home. What lengths would you go to in order to find your child. If your Dillon Stockdale you'll will do anything in your power to find your child.
Cassie Stockdale survived when plane she was on crashed. Has no idea where exactly she is or which direction to go in an effort to get help and eventually home. With little to no supplies, what's your next move?
The story does end in a cliffhanger. Fortunately the second book in the series is already available on Audible.
Kevin Pierce does a fantastic job with the narration. Great character voices. Clearly spoken. The narration flows smoothly at a nice even pace. He just has one of those voices that makes the characters and story come to life. I save his books for my road trips, listening to a story he narrates make me look forward to my weekly 9 hour trip.

"Worth a listen."
I've heard this was Chris Pike's first book. So I was pleasantly surprised. A good story. Kept me entertained. Kevin Pierce was excellent as always. I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review.
After finishing this book I bought book 2
"First part of a potentially great story."
Enjoyed this book, but it wouldn't make my top ten list of books in this genre. The narrator is absolutely superb! He made this book for me. I could listen to him read the telephone book... no, the IRS tax code... NO, a Hillary Clinton campaign speech! Enough about Kevin Pierce.
Author doesn't go into too much detail about the lengths or details of the prepper's preparations. This will delight some listeners, but I was wanting maybe more.
There is a huge hound dog and an alligator in this story, but don't take my word for it.
