Summary

Danny is only five years old, but in the words of old Mr Hallorann he is a 'shiner', aglow with psychic voltage. When his father becomes caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, Danny's visions grow out of control. As winter closes in and blizzards cut them off, the hotel seems to develop a life of its own. It is meant to be empty. So who is the lady in Room 217, and who are the masked guests going up and down in the elevator? And why do the hedges shaped like animals seem so alive? Somewhere, somehow, there is an evil force in the hotel - and that, too, is beginning to shine….

"Obviously a masterpiece, probably the best supernatural novel in a hundred years.'' (Peter Straub)

Brilliant

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Definitely worth a listen. Much more elements to this compared to the film.

Brilliant, king at his best

After watching the film and thinking what a masterpiece it was, I was totally shocked after reading the book. I can now see why Stephen King was so mad with Kubrick. The book gives so much more description into Danny’s abilities and the relationship between Danny and Halloran. The story progression from beginning to the end just flowed. If you have seen the film then reading the book is a must

Brilliant

Knew the film but never read the book. It’s very different and a really gripping, exciting and ultimately moving yarn. The reading is perfect.

Better than the film

The Shining is a classic of horror cinema, but the novel is so much better it's hard to put into words. The characterization (which has always been King's strong suit) elevates this tale of a haunted hotel to another level.

Absolutely Brilliant

I have always loved 1980 movie but after listening to the book it has changed my opinion, yes it's a great movie but it changed so much from the book.
The Stephen King TV movie is nearly exactly like the book.

It's so gripping and pulls you in (Just like the Overlook hotel)

great character writing

I'd always thought the film was really good, but I'm glad I tried the book, SO much better in every way. the film is a pale distorted imitation in comparison.

Chilling October Read!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book delivers all of the traditional ideas that you'd imagine in a horror story! It's perfect to read through October, upcoming Halloween, or any other time of the year that you want to frighten & interest yourself in a chilling tale from Stephen King's brain.

What other book might you compare The Shining to, and why?

Probably other Stephen King novels, as they all seem to link together in his fantastic storytelling way.

What does Campbell Scott bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

His despondent reading made the characters come to life, all appearing bleak but interesting for reasons I don't even really understand.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

From start to finish I was gripped.

Well worth the read

I was a little put off listening to this as I’d already seen the movie. I’m glad I didn’t let that stop me. Although it is similar to the movie there are some major differences and as always the books are always better.

Also excellently narrated

Great writing with subpar narrating

Loved the story but the narrator was bit of a let down, still glad worth listening to though. The voices were quite flat most of the time and didn't differ much. It got better as the book went on and it became easier to differentiate.

Really nice story

I got told to read the shining book by a friend but decided to get it on audible instead and am glad I did. The story was very different to the movie which surprised me quite a bit I don't think there was much from the book in the movie. I highly recommend this to anyone and for those thinking it might be too scary it's not really that scary, I've read teen books that were scarier rofl. The narrator of this audible is very good, he has a nice soothing voice which changes depending on what's happening such as something dangerous happening or exciting which somewhat made me feel like I was there.
