Summary

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. Earth has been invaded by a species that takes over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too-vivid memories.

But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves - Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

A gripping story

This is one of those books that I had to listen to at any available moment. I wanted to know what was going to happen next. The concept is interesting and I liked the characters' development. It is a book that stayed with me and that I will listen to again in the future. I enjoyed the Twilight series, but I like this even better.

Great page turner of a book?

This book gave me lots of late nights, I usually listen for 30 a night. This book got me stuck in the "Oh just one more chapter mode", most nights.

You should read this

Stephameie Meyer's book is a very good read, she is one great writer, even if you are not in to sci-fi give this a try... I don't think you will be able to put it down once you start reading it.

Very introspective, not concluded

Would you try another book written by Stephenie Meyer or narrated by Kate Reading?

I enjoy Kate Reading's narration of audio books, they are always full of character and well rehearsed. You can tell which characters are speaking just by listening to her voice - it's an amazing skill.
The story was another thing. Although a good science fiction story is believable and compelling, I found that this story was more about human emotions than good fiction. There's the usual struggle of good versus evil but simply within the same person and not on a global scale. Even the science element of this fiction is a bit too simplistic to be believable.
None the less, I persevered and found the story entertaining although you could guess the ending!
I will likely give Ms Meyer's future sci-fi stories a miss but will keep an open mind - especially since her twilight series was so compelling!

The Host by Stephenie Meyer

I decided to listen to this book before going to the cinema to see the film. It's my kind of story e.g. aliens, sci-fi etc. I did like it I have to admit but...... It's a typical Stephenie Meyer story, there is just too much soppy love in it for me, and like the Twilight saga the main character (admittedly she is a Host and therefore two people), is in love with two men.

Its a good story, but if there is an abridged version, sci-fi fans may prefer that.

Twilight fans who read the books and like sci-fi will love it.

Excellent...a world away from home...

I loved this book! I am not a teenager at 33 and only read the first book in Meyer's 'other' saga but I love a good sci-fi. It is clever, creative (singing bats?!) and entertaining. The characters are built sufficiently for me to care what happens. Meyer is currently writing book two... :)

Thoroughly good listen

I enjoyed this very much. It starts a little slowly perhaps and the concept is not a new one, but by the end I was thoroughly immersed in the characters and felt disappointed to be no longer part of that world.

I didn't want it ever to end!

I spent seven and a half hours solid listening to this whilst I worked in the garden, so engrossed in this amazing story that I only put down my tools and looked up when the book ended!

Having already seen the film, I expected it to be good, but the book surpassed the film by miles. Getting to know the soul 'Wanderer', and understanding the interaction of Melanie (the host) on her character was an absolutely fascinating journey. Kate Reading was the perfect narrator for the part - I really can't imagine anyone else matching the character so well. I loved her voice and the way she read with such depth of feeling.

I can honestly say there wasn't a single part of the whole book which wasn't intriguing and compelling. I would recommend this book most highly.

WOW!! Loved it

Have read all of Meyers books and liked them but I loved this one. Not at all what I was expecting, A story of survival and tollerance. Not your typical SCIFI at all. Give it a go you'll love it too.
