Publisher's Summary

Six rare powers govern the land of Adamah. Possessing one demands entrance to the king's army. To refuse means death.

For hundreds of years, dark clouds covered the skies of Adamah, and an ageless king ruled. Those who emerged with one of six extraordinary Shay powers were forced into the king's army, an unmatched force with inhuman strength, speed, accuracy, perception, empathy, and healing. With the army behind him, the king - a man who wields all six abilities - was invincible and unquestioned in his rule.

To most, serving the king was an honor. But for others, it was a fate worse than death. When 17-year-old Nolan Trividar witnesses the transformation of his brother from kind to cruel after entering the king's army, he vows never to follow the same path.

Powers of the Six take you to another world where the smallest person can do extraordinary things, the undead infest the night, and the sun emits more than just warmth and light.

    "Epic Fantasy is reborn"

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. I had to give this one my highest rating because it was a story that pulled you in from word one and didn't let you go until the end. Both the author and the narrator did a wonderful job. The author in creating a world so well that you feel as if you are living there and the narrator for bringing it to life with such passion. The whole thing was reminiscent of the best of the sword and sorcery epic stories such as The Drenai Saga, The Earthsea Trilogy, Elric, or Tales of the Eternal Champion yet it is also so fresh and new that it was a lovely change to read it and know that there are more of the same to come.

    "Enjoyed this One!!"

"This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review."

I enjoyed this book a lot. And Gary Furlong did a great job. He kept you right there through all the changes of the characters and the action.

Kristal Shaff is going to make a name for herself when people find out about her and I hope they do it fast. This series could go on for a while.

Setting the ground works for the story was done with great ease and the flow was great.

    4.5 stars from me

"A new and fresh "magic" system."

The story is refreshingly new. The author introduces a new type of magic system/ability system that is intriguing yet not overly complicated. The book has a lot of action in it to keep you listening, but, more importantly, the story moves at a good paces and never has a slow or boring point.

My only criticism is that I would like to have seen more character development and relationship building between the characters. The character development is there, along with some relationship building, but the development could deepen somewhat.

The narration is simply superb. The narrator does a good job in bringing the story to life. 5/5

"Great start to a promising fantasy series"
What made the experience of listening to Powers of the Six the most enjoyable?

Gary Furlong's character voices were terrific. I though his voice for Alek was especially strong. I had a hard time putting it down.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the 6 Shay powers and each one has its own appeals and drawbacks. The story was very engaging and I couldn't have predicted the turns it would take.

Have you listened to any of Gary Furlong’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't heard any of his other performances, but I would definitely like to. As long as the main character isn't a woman. I'm not generally wild about the voices men do for women.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have listened in one sitting, but it was too long. I listened to all 11+ hours in less than 10 days.

    Any additional comments?

On the whole I liked the book. I found Nolan, Greer, Taryn, Megan, and some of the minor characters to be three dimensional and delightful. However, a couple of things bothered me:

(spoiler alert) I thought Alek was a bit of a selfish hot-head that was hard to cheer for. So self-absorbed. You kill MY brother and now I have to comfort YOU? I also thought Emory was a bit of a creep. He's lusting after someone young enough to be his daughter! Not to mention that he knew that Nolan was in love with her. Gross. He had no intention of doing anything when Alek's mom was being raped, it was only that she was killed that bothered him. The end annoyed me because of Emory. I didn't see any of his so-called leadership qualities. He just controlled people's emotions. That's not leadership. That's little better than Alcandor.

But, on the whole, I would definitely listen to the sequel. I'm curious to see what will happen with Nolan's travels and what evil Alcandor is sure to bring in the future.

Also, my husband and I would both choose healing for our Shay. Second choice for Shay power would be accuracy. Can you imagine being able to play instruments perfectly or draw with amazing precision? That would be incredible.

    "Fantastic performance by Gary Furlong"

The story was gripping and amazing. I finish the story faster than I was planning. The depravity of one of the characters makes me hesitant to share with others, but it is definitely a story I wish to continue with book two.

-a. except with the coolness of superpowers and such. I think I figured out how he came up with the six Powers he did, I think they're the power is an angel might be expected to have, but I'm just guessing.

    Any additional comments?

It had a chance, but it just missed it. Its a bit boring, a bit predictable, and bit too outrageous. If you have nothing better to do with a credit, you could do worse....but also much better.

    "left wanting"

as the title suggest you are left wanting by the ending. The sacrifice your happiness thing sucks royally, unless he grows to love Kat in a sequel. But loving and pining over one person for nearly a year just to say screw it and here's why just leaves me very unsatisfied and annoyed.
