"I've awakened in a stone box about the size of a large coffin.... I'm filthy, everything aches, and, by the various so-called gods, I smell awful. I've woken up in worse places. Hmm. What does that say about my life choices?" (Eric, amateur magician, part-time vampire, and accidental king)
It's not easy being king. Especially when you've got an allergy to sunrise and sunset, a fire goddess for a mother-in-law, demonic adversaries, random assassins, and a basement full of insecurities to cope with. Add to that his daughter, the fire priestess/princess; a couple of lightly deranged professional magicians; a whole city full of wizards; and enough squabbling princes to resemble a kindergarten argument. It's enough to make a man want to just go home. Luckily for Eric, he has the world's fastest pet rock, a smart-mouthed sword, and a horse that not only understands him but likes him anyway.

this is a brilliant audio book and its a brilliant storyline and funny and best book ever I can't wait for the third book to come out it's going to be awesome heads up to the author you've done a brilliant job keep up the good work hope this 3rd book comes out really soon
Love audiobooks, keeps my hands free to do housework or drive.
science fiction in fun mode. the plot thickens. some loose ends remain but that is for the next installment ...
Garon Whited's Nightlord series is one of my favourite audio books to date. The writing is funny, witty, entertaining, dramatic and takes you on a truly extraordinary journey. Paired with Sean Runnette as the narrator it is a delight to listen to. Sean's voice adds drama and depth to an already dramatic tale and really brings the character of Eric to vibrant, blood sucking life. I was hooked from the very first paragraph and my only complaint is that I have to stop listening when the book ends. I will be eagerly, impatiently and excitedly awaiting the third book with bitten nails and a fervent hope for Eric's survival.
Yes, it is very entertaining, the performance and book manage to provide a personal experience of an American becoming a vampire in an alternate reality.
I think the humour, which is often self deprecating.
Form me the American accent which works very well with the pop culture references that so often lead to reflective humour.
An American in Mordor
Yes. Its a great story, and Garon Whited has created a wonderful blend of worlds and characters with real depth.
It blends so many genres and does it very well indeed. As I've said the characters have real depth and you relate to each of them throughout the story. The "hero" is very believable and fallible too!
As usual Sean Runnette is masterful in his performance. He does not "read a book"....he tells it like it's his story from his own memories.
Not a chance at over 30 hours!
GARON what a place to leave me hanging! Get writing this minute.....!!!!!
One off or the best I have listened too.
It stands alone, I can't compare it in kind.
The spirit of the story, his inflection, and each character is real!
It certainly was!!
So... I might have listened to shadows before sunset and well, I wish that the story would just go on forever. I loved the characters, the plot, the details and even the confusingly brief nods to things that later led me to google the series to find out if there was a prequel.
The thing I love more than anything though, was the beautiful way in which you meld science and magic. The idea of a wizard dissembling a spell as if it were code in order to hack together some quick and dirty solution, only to later refine with the help of more technical mages is simply brilliant. I love your book and I'm about to go through Sunset now.
I do hope that when the next instalment is ready, that you get it to the ever talented Sean Runette post haste, for his performance was simply stunning.
Enjoyed the overall narrative arc. The changes in Halar's character are subtle but important to pick up on for reasons that will become obvious. It's a long listen, and needs a bit of tightening up to maintain pace. Sean Runnette's performance good and at its best in the very final section.
This book rocks. The only problem that I have with it, is that I really want the sequel to this one and its not out yet so I'm frustrated.
"OH NO!!! I have to wait for book 3. :("
I loved listening to this novel! The story grabbed my attention immediately and it held it through to the end. I love the magic system, it makes sense to me, and I love how the protagonist works through the problems he encounters by using magic and his vampire powers. This is a truly unique vampire story and it's truly epic. There is a HUGE cliffhanger at the end, which leaves me chomping at the bit wanting to know what happens in Book 3. I hope it's not a long wait. I think the narrator is a perfect match too. I can't imagine any one else narrating it. Sean Runnette was excellant!
"Horribly over detailed"
Love the first book, could not wait for the second one to end. It's a 47 hour book that could've easily been 10 hours or less. The story itself was decent, when he actually told the story. After reading this book I'm not sure if I will venture into book 3.
"Deep, Rich, Amusing."
Beautifully done. A vampire story without being a typical YA vampire story. The story has humor, depth, and is surprisingly captivating for being so very, very long. The narrator has a pleasing and varied voice. He does a really good job of separating the various characters and keeping their voices straight. Buy this audio book on its own or with the previous in the series. Either way, you are in for a treat and I envy you your first listen.
"little too much explanation?"
I enjoyed this book but I think most of the explanations belong in the first book. hopefully the next installment will deal with more storyline and less long winded magical teaching. all and all the characters are believable .
"the first was awesome this one was still good"
why oh why stop there?!?!?!? you evil bastard!
this book is no good without having read the first but I highly recommend reading the first even if you don't read this one. bunches of fun
"Even better than the last!"
I do not normally write reviews, but I had to for this book. The first book in this series was spectacular but this book eclipses the first by far. Gritty, dark fantasy, wonderful world building, exceptional characters, humor and death. This book has it all. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Great story telling Garon, thank you for a wonderful series. And Sean, you really bring the book to life for me. Thank you both.
"How dare you leave us hanging like that!!!"
This is a wonderful second book, but come on man really. I can't wait for the next one....
"Wizard, Vampire, Hero, Bad Ass..."
Who is Halar the Night Lord? Can he build and rule a society free from corruption?
Will his enemies succeed in destroying him?
This is the second installment in the Nightlord series by Garon Whited. These are excellent fantasy novels that follow the adventures and exploits of Halar and his companions.
If you like fantasy, action, and suspense stories then these books are for you!
As always Sean Runnette does a killer job narrating!
absolutely love this story, and hope it never ends! I'm anxiously awaiting number 3 to see how this little twist plays out. bravo, to the author!
