‘Unquestionably the finest English novel of the fantastic written in the last seventy years ... Funny, moving, scary, otherworldly, practical and magical' NEIL GAIMAN

The year is 1806. centuries have passed since practical magicians faded into the nation’s past. But scholars of this glorious history discover that one remains: the reclusive Mr Norrell, whose displays of magic send a thrill through the country.

Proceeding to London, he raises a beautiful woman from the dead and summons an army of ghostly ships to terrify the French. Yet the cautious, fussy Norrell is challenged by the emergence of another magician: the brilliant novice Jonathan Strange. Young, handsome and daring, Strange is the very antithesis of Norrell.

So begins a dangerous battle between these two great men which overwhelms that between England and France. And their own obsessions and secret dabblings with the dark arts are going to cause more trouble than they can imagine.

Enjoyed every minute of this magical 'history'

This clever, well-written story is beautifully performed. Original, gripping fantasy written in the genre of a biographical history, rooted in British magic.

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

What did you like most about Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell?

Didn't get into the book 'til around the third chapter. As soon as you accept the stuffy Georgian shabby etiquette then the Author begins to weaver her story and have fun with your expectations. Favourite Character, John Childermass.

good at the end but took too long to get there.

Really enjoyed the ending, but only perseverance got me there in the end. the last 5 plus hours were excellent. overall the book needed greater editing; far too many footnotes. the story was there but at times was overwhelmed by detail that was not often needed, so at times you just switched off. However it was creative and certainly not predictable, with a great deal of imagination.

Fascinating!

I struggled a bit at the beginning, I admit, but once the story started to really develop I found I could not put it down. Amazing performance for a fascinating story. Despite the length, I'm very sad it is not longer!

Outstanding, enthralling and brilliant.

It has been a long time since I have read a book of this calibre. It was absolutely brilliant from start to finish. Highly recommended.

Loooooong

Initially there was a lot of take in with learning about all the characters, I enjoyed the narrator and the differences though. This is a long book, I know that seems obvious from the 32 HR running time but it just seemed like a chore in the end to get through it. I am glad that I persevered as I enjoyed the closure that the ending gave me but the middle definitely dragged.

Superb

I think this is the best audiobook I’ve ever listened to. I can’t recommend it highly enough. I’ve been absorbed in it; I feel quite lost now it’s finished.

I loved it

If I had read this book instead of listening to it I may have abandoned it. However, this a phenomenal story, beautifully told. The slower pace, historical footnotes and drier characters that that fill the 1st third serve to ground the story in its reality.
So to anyone struggling with the beginning I would urge you to persist as the final 3rd is as gripping and exciting and beautiful as anything I have read.
As others have said the characters are in common with those of Dickens, the scholarly magic reminiscent of Harry Potter and the folklore akin to Tolkien. What more could you want?

Alternative history of magicians in the Napoleonic time of war. Also with Evil fairies! what more could you want in a book.
