Editor reviews
Hyperion, one of the most celebrated Sci-Fi novels of all time and the first book in the Hyperion Cantos series, begins in the midst of an interplanetary war in the 29th century. Five pilgrims set out to the mysterious title planet in an attempt to prevent Armageddon, but while most of the planets in the Hegemony are connected by rapid transit farcaster portals, the journey is far from safe. Modified humans known as Outsters lurk in space stations between planets, threatening the very fabric of the planetary alliance.
Winner of both the Hugo Award and the Locus Award for Best Novel, Hyperion is easily one of the most important, groundbreaking books in Sci-Fi. It incorporates favourite elements of genre — including time travel, galactic war and intricate world building — making for a listen that any space odyssey fan will love. In audio, the experience is even more immersive as you’ll hear the individual stories of the five Pilgrims, each brought vividly to life by a different narrator.
Summary
Critic reviews
Locus Award, Best Novel, 1990
"Dan Simmons has the Midas touch: Every genre he writes - whether SF, horror, mystery, historical, or thriller - he turns to gold. Hyperion and The Fall Of Hyperion set a new standard for grand-scale science fiction." (Kevin J. Anderson, author of The Saga of Seven Suns)
"Dan Simmons was a star from the outset. It was the Hyperion books that made him a superstar. The man, quite simply, is what we in the trade call a writer's writer." (Mike Resnick, Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author)
Each of [the pilgrim's] stories would make a superb novella on its own. ( The New York Times Book Review, Gerald Jonas)

Old style scfi
It's more a book for writers and literature fans than a good story.
The book is composed of 6 seperate stories, most of which are pretty zzz
Was 1hr from the end when I decided to just read the wiki summary of the book and gave up.
There's better scifi books out there

Confusing
Don’t understand the hype. The writing is ok. The story is confusing. And the next book is worse…

Nonsense
Any additional comments?
The performance of the 'actors' was let down by poor production - the voices just don't sound right when put together.
The structure of the story seems to be along the lines of a Pilgrims Progress with a load of different characters telling their tales as they travel. It's full of odd references to poet John Keats, as well as pseudo-theological themes which are no doubt very clever. Unfortunately I just found the underlying premise of the Shrike a bit baffling and despite sticking with it I just found myself not caring, and I gave up with about 2 hours to go

no ending
this book dragged with poor explanations of tech and aliens, I struggled to the end and there wasn't one. the author didn't have enough imagination to resolve the story. the pilgrims never reach the end point of the journey. I was left angry

Disappointed
I read something of the author and the claim that this is epic sci-fi. I love epic sci-fi. This is not epic, it’s barely sci-fi. The author’s constant references to the 18th and 19th century was annoying for a novel set in a future time when there is only a memory of earth. The tech was lazy, he clumsily aimed for a mix of Canterbury tales and Beowulf. Failed. I listened all the way to the end, hoping for something but just felt bored. Won’t fill this Authors pockets further. Iain M Banks, Culture series, the first book was published 2 years before this, that is epic imagination.

Watch out for the paedophilia
How on earth this is considered a good piece of science fiction and how it won any awards completely baffles me.
Leaving aside the story for now, the descriptions of the character's sexual activities are unnecessary, creepy and rather cringeworthy, I felt uncomfortable with them and skipped past, but toward the end of the book they crossed the line from creepy into outright paedophilia when the author describes a sexual encounter with a "not yet 16 year old girl". That's the point where I stopped listening and decided to return the book for refund.
The story itself is a rather strange and pretentious mix of spaceage quest combined with mysticism/religion and technical mumbo-jumbo that has absolutely no basis in scientific reality. Many of the characters are loathsome, many seem to have no point at all and all of their stories are dragged out and tiresome.
The book does not have a conclusion, I suspect you're meant to read the follow-up in the series, which I certainly won't be doing.

Actually couldn't listen to it
Oh god just listen to the sex scene at the end of the second tale and that should tell you all you need to know. Or listen to the poet's voice. Appalling

I can't get my time back
Hated everything about this book. A very lacking book decorated with sci-fi. Its an English teacher in love with books, that's it. It could have been shorter love letter.
