Summary

The acclaimed BBC Radio 4 space drama arrives in its entirety for the very first time, with a bonus introduction by creator and writer James Follett. The starship Challenger has been on a 115-year-long mission, exploring other galaxies for suitable Earth-like planets to colonise. The present crew of four were born on the ship and have never left it. But when the Challenger attempts to return to the crew's home planet, it discovers that the Earth has vanished!

When they were first broadcast on radio, Earthsearch and Earthsearch II generated a flood of fan letters to Radio Times. Now at last their superb sound is available, digitally remastered for the first time. Also included is an introduction from James Follett, first broadcast as part of BBC7's "Men, Martians, and Machines".

Highly enjoyable

I remember this on the radio when it was first broadcast, but only caught a few episodes at the beginning. I have always wanted to hear the whole story, so just great to find it here on Audible after all these years. Like all the best sci-fi it makes you think about what life would be like in a future where space travel were possible. If you passed decades in suspended animation, how would you then relate to people you knew who had aged while you remained the same? What kind of person would you be if you had spent your whole life growing up on a spacecraft? And perhaps the most pertinent question for our own near future - what happens when computers have true intelligence and free will?

It all makes for an epic drama that moves along at a cracking pace. The only negative I found is that the story moves along too quickly at times and characters sometimes appear and disappear from the narrative rapidly. Overall though, it's great stuff and highly enjoyable. Well worth a listen.

earthsearch suprisingly good

I got this on the strength of a friend having raved about the series 20 years or so ago. Its episodic format is reminiscent of Doctor Who but the story line is good and the whole concept of the story was sound. Some aspects have been covered in other stories by Bova and Asimov but this is a different spin. If you like radio drama, Blake's Seven or Doctor Who you will probably like this.

Great performances in this space drama

I'd not encountered Earthsearch before - I think I'm a few years too young to have noticed it on its first orbit.

It's not as polished as Hitchhikers nor of the calibre of Doctor Who but it is worth some attention. I particularly enjoyed the performances on the main actors who convey the drama and narrative in a powerful way.

The FX are basic but they certainly don't detract.

If you're a fan of the BBC Radio 'Lord of the Rings' then you're in the a treat as most of the cast for Earthsearch featured in LOTR.

Thoroughly enjoyable and I would love James Follett to write a third series - I'd love to know how they're all getting along.

Great story

Having read many stories about colony ships I was not expecting anything new. However, I was gripped from the start and found it a great holiday listen.

retro Sci-fi at its best

really thrilling storytelling but the performance was a little irritating at times. the 80s Sci-fi whistles and bells get a little tiresome but overall I would recommend this to any Sci-fi fan. especially if you like things like the original star trek series.

Excellent

I really enjoyed listening to this dramatised book. There are still points (listened to it a number of times) where I can't bear what's happening and really feel for the characters. Great plot twist towards the end of the earth search two

Stands up to the test of time

I loved this series when it first came out, later I bought the tapes, but as someone mentioned, they were edited down. This version is complete with James doing a little intro. Dispite the story sometimes being a bit too child like it has just captivated me again for the past two days. And the price... Did I mention that its over ?60 on CD at amazon? Its a bargain here!

Classic Sci-Fi at it's Best

I first heard about EarthSearch when I was reading about something completely different. I looked at the information about it and it sounded interesting. Then I heard it broadcast on BBC Radio 7 in 2009. I liked what I heard and decided to buy it and I'm glad I did. I also like the special intro and outro from James Follett. The format of the story is very similar to that of Charles Chilton's Journey into Space. If you like that, you'll like this. The only thing I was unsure of was the accents of the actors. Nearly all of the actors have BBC accents. However, I still liked the story. Thank you Audible for making it available.

trip down memory lane

real classic sci-fi. sounds effects are grating, and the acting a little stilted, but the story and pacing is great
