Summary

January 1937. Jack Miller has just about run out of options. His shoes have worn through, he can't afford to heat his rented room in Tooting, and he longs to use his training as a specialist wireless operator instead of working in his dead-end job. When he is given the chance to join an arctic expedition, as communications expert, by a group of elite Oxbridge graduates, he brushes off his apprehensions and convinces himself to join them.

As the young men set sail from a gloomy Britain on the verge of war, Jack feels the overwhelming excitement of not knowing what lies ahead. Little can he imagine the horrors that await him in their destination, Gruhuken, a place that cannot escape the savage echo of its past.

Pretty good, reasonably scary

Good story, sufficiently gay. Minus points for dogs dying and terrible pronounciation of Norwegian words. Inspired me to continue avoiding anything north of Bergen, which is probably a morally sound takeaway.

Fantastic book - completely gripping

A well-paced story despite the very subtle plot developments, I found Dark Matter completely enthralling. The horror elements were believable and not at all farfetched. The feeling of isolation rang clear in each chapter.

A great book.

A Masterpiece

The perfect balance between the beauty of the land, the suspense and the complete terror. Wonderfully narrated. Don't listen to it in bed unless you want to have to sleep with the light on!

A journal

This is not your usual pace but neither is it boring or predictable. I honestly don't know how the story was written without first hand experience. Very enjoyable, give it the time it deserves. But see if you listen to this on a cold dark journey into work, some of your hair just may turn a little greyer when get that creepy tingle :)

Chilling

I don't often read/listen to ghost stories - I scare easily- but the setting of this one intrigued me. Paver's writing coupled with Northam's excellent narration transported me not just to a small cabin in a dark, frozen wasteland, but to the time depicted as well.
The ghost part was creepy, the sense of dread was heavy. As other reviewers have said, there is quite a bit of repetition ('feeling of dread', 'that round, wet head'), but that seemed realistic given the setting and isolation Jack was in.
The denouement was a bit rushed I felt, and although the how/what was explained, unless I missed it there was nothing about the why, beyond a rather general premise of what constant dark can make men capable of. I found that frustrating and although Jack's realisation re Gus (obvious to us from early on) might hint at a why, it's a theory that doesn't actually hold water on closer examination.
On the whole an enjoyable listen, tucked up in bed on a very cold December night, and I'm looking forward to more.

Highly Recommended.

Stunning! This story had me hooked from the start. Entirely believable and really quite unnerving in places. I'm glad I listened to it during the day and not by myself at night.

Absolutely excellent

As a dedicated thriller/horror/suspense reader, I am not easy to please, but Dark Matter ticked all the boxes. Cleverly plotted, beautifully written, chilling...my partner and I talked about it for days after we finished listening to it, and he doesn't usually like chilling tales. Everything about this story was credible, absorbing and yes, rivetting. Five star!

feeling of cold unease

Not horror in the way I was expecting... leaves you with a feeling of cold unease... a dark malevolence...
