Summary

Do you know what the hardest thing for a Russian learner is? Finding proper reading material that they can handle...which is precisely the reason we’ve created this audiobook!

Teachers love giving out tough, expert-level literature to their students, books that present many new problems to the reader and force them to search for words in a dictionary every five minutes - it’s not entertaining, useful, or motivating for the student at all, and many soon give up on learning!

In this audiobook, we have compiled 20 easily understandable, compelling, and fun stories that will allow you to expand your vocabulary and give you the tools to improve your grasp of the wonderful Russian tongue.

How Russian Short Stories for Beginners works:

  • Each story is interesting and entertaining with realistic dialogues and day-to-day situations.
  • The summaries follow a synopsis in Russian and in English of what you just heard, both to review the lesson and for you to see if you understood what the tale was about.
  • At the end of those summaries, you’ll be provided with a list of the most relevant vocabulary involved in the lesson, as well as slang and sayings that you may not have understood at first glance!
  • Finally, you’ll be provided with a set of tricky questions in Russian, providing you with the chance to prove that you learned something in the story. Don’t worry if you don’t know the answer to any - we will provide them immediately after, but no cheating!

We want you to feel comfortable while learning the tongue; after all, no language should be a barrier for you to travel around the world and expand your social circles!

So look no further! Pick up your copy of Russian Short Stories for Beginners and level up your Russian right now!

Good learning material

A wonderful resource of new vocabulary presented in an interesting and useful way. The vocabulary lists include small snippets and phrases as well as just individual words, and are translated in the form they are encountered in the story, not in their sterile dictionary form, making them far more memorable.
I would definitely not put this book in the beginner category however. I would recommend a good basic Russian course to have been taken first. The text provides no grammar explaination which is perfectly understandable for a vocabulary builder aimed at a student with a reasonable prior acquaintance with Russian grammar, but would soon become very confusing for a total beginner.
The narration feels slighlty strange to my ear. The diction in places sounds plain weird and the pronunciation of several English words is just plain wrong (find the part with the word 'pneumonia').
On a final note, the ablative case is mentioned over and over again. Apart from the irritatingly hilarious pronunciation of the word 'ablative', the ablative case doesn't even exist in Russian, or English for that matter, so why is it here?
The Russian pronunciation is excellent.
If you can overlook or indeed overhear the slightly bizarre presentation this is still a really good resource for upper-beginner level learners.

Russian Stories - interesting and Good study mater

The audio book comes with an accompanying PDF. You can read the PDF as the audio is playing to hear the pronunciation of each word, then a summary of the story in both Russian and English is provided, with a few questions about the story to test your understanding. At the end of each story there is also a break down of key words used in the story and their translation, i used these translations along with my ANKI app to review the words i had learned throughout. With over 7 and a half hours, it keeps you very busy and helped me to expand my vocabulary beyond learning individual words. Well worth a listen!

A good mix of stories

As a beginner to learning Russian I was looking for stories that would push my vocabulary more than just reading children's books. This audiobook will push most beginners to learn new vocabulary. The good thing is that there is a PDF that you can read along with the audio.
There is a good mixture of stories covering many aspects of life experiences and the stories are narrated clearly, although a little fast if you're a beginner. You can slow it down though which helped me. The English parts are also clearly narrated by an exceptionally posh narrator, but it works well. I would recommend this book to all beginners who have some experience with Russian already.

Good stories plus audio

This is the audio version of Russian short stories for beginners. The audio version is the same as the print or kindle version but with audio, obviously. And a pdf of the text is included. The stories are short but challenging and every phrase is covered in the explanatory notes after the text. With Russian, there is often a difference between the spelling and pronunciation and so the audio is really useful. By the time you get through the stories, the differences between speech and writing will have been internalised, which will help a lot with speech and writing. Really well thought out and executed.
