Summary

They never found Leah Parata. Not a boot, not a backpack, not a turquoise beanie. After she left me that day, she vanished off the face of the earth.

A close-knit community is ripped apart by disturbing revelations that cast new light on a young woman's disappearance 25 years ago.

After years of living overseas, Emily returns to New Zealand to care for her father who has dementia. As his memory fades and his guard slips, she begins to understand him for the first time - and to glimpse shattering truths about his past.

Are some secrets best left buried?

Another emotive suspense novel from the Richard & Judy best-selling author of After the Fall and Radio 2 Book Club pick, 2020's The Secrets of Strangers - perfect for fans of Jodi Picoult and Clare Mackintosh.

Critic reviews

“An atmospheric and emotional tale of family, mystery and love. Charity Norman always takes her readers to unexpected places, and every character she writes is brilliantly drawn. She is an extraordinarily talented storyteller.” (Kelly Rimmer)

Characters that endear and a beautiful story

Charity Norman never fails to impress me.
I listen to an average of 2-3 books a week and this one is my favourite of the year. The characters are all so likeable and the and the story made me feel such empathy with them as things progressed. 5 stars

Excellent story

I think this was a casual sale purchase and yet it has proven an unexpected pleasure, a well-planned, well written story which will stay with me for a long time. No spoilers.

Agree on the terrible mixed up ‘Yorkshire accent ‘

However really enjoyed the book
And narration otherwise …. Thought it flowed well and covered the issues with insight and sensitivity

Very irritating Leeds accent

The Yorkshire accent morphed into Manchester Liverpool and Welsh at times- found it very distracting, it would have been better just read straight

Beautifully crafted story, worth reading twice.

This is an atmospheric and engrossing mystery which winds itself around the diagnosis of two silent but frightening diseases which sometimes crash into ordinary family life without warning - Alzheimer’s and Huntingdon’s. Somehow, Charity Norman manages to use them as a gentle device to create a beautiful mystery, which she unpeels layer by layer. It starts with a country doctor, a missing young woman, a blue beanie and a close community, all set in the beautiful landscape of New Zealand, with attention to the detail of the wildlife and the unruly weather. Absolutely loved it. As usual with a Charity Norman novel, the atmosphere stays with you long after the final words have been spoken. Well read, although bad luck on the Northern and Irish accents - but that didn’t matter because the narrator allowed the story to shine through anyway. About to re-read it.

Charming mystery

Another lovely story from Charity Norman.
Emily’s visiting her father who’s suffering from Alzheimers, coping with his struggles and unraveling a 25 year old mystery, an heartfelt story.
The narrator has a pleasant voice

Extraordinary and unusual

I'm not going to say much except that I was carried forward by the story, feeling deep sympathy for the characters, until the wholly unexpected denouement. Very much worth a listen.

Wow

Another masterwork. Ms. Norman has got under the skin of the landscape and woven a deeply moving tale into it. Like her other books, will stay with you long after you’ve finished it.

I have now listened to five Charity Norman novels and have loved them all. Remember Me is probably my favourite.
