Summary

A novel for anyone who has loved and lost and lived to tell the tale.

As a young woman boxes up her ex-boyfriend's belongings and prepares to see him one last time, she wonders where it all went wrong and whether it was ever right to begin with. Burdened with a broken heart, she asks herself the age-old question...is love really worth it?

Out of Love is a bittersweet romance told in reverse. Beginning at the end of a relationship, each chapter takes us further back in time, weaving together an already unravelled tapestry, from tragic break-up to magical first kiss. In this dazzling debut, Hazel Hayes performs a post-mortem on love, tenderly but unapologetically exploring every angle, from the heights of joy to the depths of grief, and all the madness and mundanity in between. This is a modern story with the heart of a classic: truthful, tragic and ultimately full of hope.

"I fell in love with this book. The writing was good enough to make me forget I had a phone, put it that way." (Aisling Bea)

Great read, if you’re a fan of Hazel you will not be disappointed. This book is just as you’d expect - witty, realist, wry, heartbreaking and heartwarming. If this book is not made into a film I will be shocked.

Funny but heart wrenching!

Really loved this it really made me laugh a lot but it was also really heart wrenching as you get to understand what this couple went through and was relatable in terms of relationship breakups etc. I also love the fact that it’s read by the author. Really loved it. Thank you hazel!

absolutely brilliant

This story is written absolutely beautifully. A love story written in reverse is such an interesting way to delve into the ways in wich personal relationships can affect your life. I really enjoyed listening to it. Having watched Hazels youtube for many years, hearing her read her own work was amazing.

Big recommend

I have been excited to read this book since it came out, and it has exceeded my expectations! The concept is so original and all the characters feel very real.

This book is made even better by the narration. I think it’s so special when the author narrates the audiobook, and Hazel has a great voice for narration.

I thought the format of this book was so interesting, in the way it told the love story backwards, starting with the breakup. I found it a quite refreshing and creative spin on a generally quite formulaic genre.

Thoroughly appreciate that Hazel even narrated the acknowledgments! I always miss reading them when I listen to audiobooks.

I only gave it four stars instead of five because I have only read it the once and I like to be able to come back to a book and still enjoy it the second time to give it 5 stars.

I’ll definitely be reading anything else Hazel Hayes releases and would recommend this one to a friend :)

Beautiful and heartbreaking

I loved the performance and the realism of what it is to be an Irish woman with deep rooted transgenerational trauma

Phenomenal

An intimate and beautiful exploration of human nature and relationships. A very impressive work and I really hope to see more from this author in the future. So many relatable, keenly observant truths, gorgeously put; a real joy of a read, despite the deep and sometimes depressing subject matter, it’s all dealt with gently yet with an expertly beautiful command of language that really blew me away. You can sense a whole lot of thought, work and care went into this delight of a novel, I can very much recommend.
