Summary

England is at war. Growing up in a lighthouse, Pet's world has been one of storms, secret tunnels and stories about sea monsters. But now the clifftops are a terrifying battleground, and her family is torn apart.

This is the story of a girl who is small, afraid and unnoticed.

A girl who freezes with fear at the enemy planes ripping through the skies overhead.

A girl who is somehow destined to become part of the strange, ancient legend of the Daughters of Stone....

Strong and Engaging

Very strong story that’s engrossing with twists and turns that carry one deeper and deeper into the mystery. I’ve enjoyed this as an adult who wanted a good listen. The characters, their motives, relationships and circumstances have a depth that has added to the pleasure. They change and grow as the story unfolds. If there is a message that stands out, it’s that good people sometimes do bad things, but there is also a lot about honesty and forgives too.

A good yarn, well told.

Engaging and beautifully sustained. A couple of minor anomalies only a WW2 historian would even notice, which in no way detracted from my enjoyment of the story.

Great storytelling with a different perspective of world war 2. I liked the characters and language used was specific and made it interesting

Good

I liked that the author is also the narrator and did a great job, her voice is very soothing too.

A Lovely Tale

This is an interesting story. I'm not normally a fan of first person perspective. But it really worked in this case.

I listened to the audio version of this story and the narrators voice perfectly fit the character and really draw you in. So much so that I finished this book in one sitting! Which was not my intention.

I can't confirm how historical accurate the book is as I am not familiar with this time period. However as a lay person it seemed well researched and executed.

There was an interesting inclusion of disability which I wasn't expecting. However it does flirt with being a 'negative' portrayal in my opinion. For me personal it was acceptable but I could see how others could feel misrepresented by it. I feel the author should have really committed to this aspect if they were going to included. And it would have been good to have more information about it. But I don't want to give away any spoilers so I will leave there.
