Summary

When retiring isn't an option, it's kill or be killed.

Stacks Fischer is a killer for hire. For more than three decades, he’s loyally served the Syndicate Corporation as its most-feared and respected enforcer around the solar system. He’s buried the company’s dirty laundry six feet deep, no matter who had to be taken out to do it.

Now, Stacks has a problem - he’s losing his mind to incurable form of dementia, and unwittingly spilling corporate secrets in public.

When SynCorp decides Fischer has outlived his usefulness, they decide it's time to permanently retire him. But Stacks isn’t quite ready to go. With every one of SynCorp’s Five Factions gunning for him - and his own mind slowly rebelling - Fischer leads a pack of would-be assassins in a final, deadly chase across the solar system.

The old hit man refuses to fade quietly into oblivion at the hands of his disease or the business he's dedicated his life to. He’s choosing an Optional Retirement Plan.

Don't miss this pulse-pounding science fiction thriller filled with twists that will leave you on the edge of your seat. It's perfect for fans of Titanborn, The Expanse, and Minority Report.

A Suprise Gem

Criticisms First

Optional Retirement is part of a large series of books. Its slots somehere in the The SynCorp books, but Audible doesnt actually tell you where (Or gives you any indication that technically this is part of a series). You dont need read any of the other books, this one fleshes out the world and charactors brilliantly, but having that knowledge before buying would have been appreciated.

Its a stellar book, and I would actually now try others in the series - only problem being I now feel like Ive possibly jumped to far ahead in the SynCorp story

Either way, worth a punt

R C Bray fits this perfectly

This is a well told tale, and in R C Bray, a great performance. All in all it offers a great listen.

Wonderful story

gritty, clever and deceptively deep.
from poetic descriptions, to emotive dialogue, this story is an absolute must!!

p.s. i recieved a free copy of this book and have left an honest review of my own volition.

Great Book

A good book with a great storyline, would have been good if it could have been made into a couple of books but you never know.....

Really entertaining, I couldn't stop listening.

As always RC Bray read this brilliantly. The story was action packed and well paced. It also gave me an insight into Alzheimer's disease which I honestly did not expect. I would like to know more about the writer's research and whether they have direct knowledge of the disease as their descriptions were incredibly vivid.

Great story and excellent naration

I like the narrator's voice and his voicing of the different characters.

The idea behind this book is clever, and in many ways you could set it today rather than in the future. The lead character's physical failings are sadly familiar in the modern world, and the way it plays out here works really well.

I've read this author before, but this is my first time with one of his audio books. Both media work well.

Fantastic book

This fantastic book blends sci fi with noir to produce an excellent story with a main character who you know is a bad guy but you cannot help but like him. When the story switches to him coming to terms with his disease it puts him in a different light and made me wonder how I would handle something as big as that in my life, which in my eyes is a sign of excellent writing. Overall this is a fantastic story, great characters and as usual RC Bray draws the listener into the world in such a way that you get totally absorbed.

Nice find

Picked this purely for the cover art, pleasantly surprised with RC Bray narrating and loved the story to boot. Aging fix it man, to settle things with his rival before his time is up.

Loved it.
