Summary

Demystify the core concepts of cognitive psychology.

Written specifically for psychology students - and not other academics - Cognitive Psychology for Dummies is an accessible and entertaining introduction to the field. Unlike the dense and jargon-laden content found in most psychology textbooks, this practical guide provides listeners with easy-to-understand explanations of the fundamental elements of cognitive psychology so that they are able obtain a firm grasp of the material.

Cognitive Psychology for Dummies follows the structure of a typical university course, which makes it the perfect supplement for students in need of a clear and enjoyable overview of the topic. The complexities of a field that explores internal mental processes - including the study of how people perceive, remember, think, speak, and solve problems - can be overwhelming for first-year psychology students. This practical resource cuts through the academic-speak to provide a clear understanding of the most important elements of cognitive psychology.

  • Obtain a practical understanding of the core concepts of cognitive psychology
  • Supplement required course reading with clear and easy-to-understand overviews
  • Gain confidence in your ability to apply your knowledge of cognitive psychology
  • Prepare for upcoming exams or topic discussions

Cognitive Psychology for Dummies is the perfect resource for psychology students who need a clear and listenable overview of the core concepts of cognitive psychology.

Dangerous when driving

This book will tell you what it will tell you in the most laborious way possible. First, each heading will be read out, the introductory paragraph summarizing what is to follow followed by what is to follow peppered with excuses that the authors are human and quite probably the page and ISBN numbers. I could quite easily have crashed my car listening to this frustrating audio book. My 30 minute drive to work saw me reach the height of anger with nothing achieved. So much for trying to understand myself! If I learnt one thing, it was to buy books with stories woven in rather than text books. Probably good for a reading revision session but not audible.

Excellent listen...

I found this audible spot on.

Relevant subject matter, and narrators voice interesting and easy on the ear.

Thoroughly enjoyed.

Well written but too much like a reference book

The style of writing in this book is very easy to listen to and the narrator certainly gets this across well. The concepts of how the brain works and how our senses interact with our brains is thorough. As the book is sequential in nature, it reads like a reference book. This makes it heavy going to listen to. Cases studies are very short as you would expect in a reference book but given that the book is an audible book, longer case studies would have helped a narrative thread. This is my main criticism of the book.
The one thing that the book doesn't say is how cognitive psychology helps people or give solid ideas to the reader about how he/she could use it. A greater focus on case studies and ideas for the reader would have been best.
The recording is good although whenever the narrator says the word, "Psychology" the sibilance is painful!
An interesting book but not really effective as an audio book given it's reference type structure.

Good but...

Well written like many Dummie's books.
Well performed.
One notices a couple of instances where the authors' political learnings are in evidence, something which should be redacted.

Not easy to flick between chapters

Not easy to flick between chapters because they only have numbers and not actual titles listed. A nice overview in areas.

.

would be useful to have the titles included on the chapter list to make it easier to refer back to.

Text book

A bit too dull, just when you think it is going to get to a point it references another chapter of the book.
