Summary

The Sunday Times Thriller of the Month

Expertly researched and visionary in scale, international number one best seller Ken Follett’s Never is more than a thriller. It imagines a scenario we all hope never comes true, one that will keep you transfixed until the final moments....

A stolen US army drone.

A shrinking oasis in the Sahara Desert.

A secret stash of deadly chemicals.

Each is a threat to the stability of the world but individually are problems that can be overcome. In the diplomatic arena though, everyone will have a different way of dealing with such a threat. And when those in charge disagree and refuse to back down, it will kick off an international chain reaction with potentially catastrophic consequences: a world edging closer to war....

Now three people must work tirelessly and with the utmost skill to stop that from happening:

A spy working undercover with jihadists.

A brilliant Chinese spymaster.

A US president beleaguered by a populist rival for the next election.

The only question is, in a game of brinksmanship can the inevitable ever be stopped?

Sign of the times.

Not his greatest work I have heard. Try the historical ones for characters you care about. It feels like it tries too hard at times although parts such as the widowed mother are a delight and written as well as ever.

Don't read this if you are feeling low!

Fantastic read, first half in particular. Found the second half unbelievably frustrating! So we'll written.

Outstanding as always

Wow, great storyline, well written as usual. Wasn’t sure at the beginning of the story if I would enjoy but persevered and thoroughly loved the story. Can’t wait for another Ken Follett.

Maybe Follett's best epic story

Follett has written a few epic books covering swathes of history. While meaty, they are masterpieces of story and education and I've vested hundreds of hours in listening to them, and then re-listening.

However, I do believe that Never is the best of them all.

To many unnecessary characters

Really disappointed, I usually love Ken Follett novels but this one was too long with too many unnecessary character. It’s was all about the last 3 hours with an anticlimactic ending

Mixed bag

I have read/ listened to very many Ken Follet books. This one I probably enjoyed the least.
Dislikes: general ‘wokeness’ . Box ticking ‘diversity’
Unnecessary and unbelievable love stories x3 against a background of nuclear war.
For me, the reader grated though many others liked her.
Unnecessary detail eg names of very minor characters. Details of food eaten and clothes worn.

Likes: The central plot of the snowballing descent into nuclear war. Believable and chilling

Frightening, but entertaining

It is a great story of one of the biggest "one ifs" in modern times. interesting characters, and realistic plot. However, it has many unnecessary details at certain moments of the story that turn out to be irrelevant to the plot.

Gripping story

Second time listening and I heard more. Stunning but scarily close to reality now.

Enthralling

Reader was superb so much so I thought there must be more than one person as her voice inflection changed with each character. Excellent well researched book interesting and exciting.

got to the end, but only just

disconnected plotting with too simplistic characterisation make this a weak thriller. not his best
