Summary

A letter from beyond the grave One last request An unsolvable crime

When Miss Marple receives a letter from the recently deceased millionaire Jason Rafiel, she’s not sure what to make of it.

Knowing her deductive skills, he challenges her to solve a crime. If she does so, she will inherit £20,000.

The only problem is that he has failed to mention who was involved, or where, and when the crime was committed. Jane Marple is intrigued.

Never underestimate Miss Marple

‘Sorry Poirot, but I’m team Marple every time. A mind to rival the great Sherlock Holmes – and much handier with a knitting needle – yet patronised and underestimated by those around her, her invisibility is her superpower. That and her uncanny understanding of the darkest depths of human nature . . .’
Lucy Foley

‘Her gift is pure genius.’

Emilia Fox is the story's Nemesis

While Christie is the story's birth mother, Fox makes the story come alive! Wonderful characterisation and superb subtlety. I loved every nuance of the plot.

Perfect in every way

I loved this reading of a story which I think of as one of Agatha Christie’s most intriguing creations. Beautifully read by Emilia Fox

a very satisfying mystery delightfully narrated

A wealthy friend, Mr Rafiel, leaves Miss Marple in his Will a bequest of £20000 - on condition she solves a crime for him. But she is not told what the crime was or who it involved, a perplexing and irritating start, but her curiosity is aroused. Doubting she can ever solve it, she sets about it with the meagre clues she can work out from knowing him and the slightest of hints he leaves. And so it proceeds...
The narration by Emilia Fox was wonderful especially her voice for Miss Marple.
Integral to the story is the nature of love and evil and their connection, and the importance of justice as a value.
Having the two helpers step in at the end makes for rather a deus-ex-machina ending but when your heroine is going on 80, something of the sort is excusable.

Miss Marple at her best!

Having been disappointed by “At Bertram’s Hotel,” I was slightly worried about listening to “Nemesis” but there was no need. The plot and characters are carefully crafted by Ms Christie with plenty of red herrings and it was brought to life effectively by the narrator. One of the best of Christie’s works.

Would have been better without the accents

Classic AC but not for everyone this book has a lot of old fashioned prejudice towards foreign nationals and a lot of victim blaming for people who may have undergone S. Assault. The book itself is good but the narration is terrible at times. If the narrator hadn't tried accents and just read the book then it would have been so much better, she has a wonderful normal reading voice just not accents.
